Exhaust/muffler recommendations

actually there are no o2 sensors under my jeep, its all before where i deleted my cat so no codes are being thrown, its not bad at all, i mean its a lil loud but i love the sound that it makes, sounds like my ride is screaming at the world :gr_grin:

Then you deleted the resonator, not the cat converters. There are 4 O2 sensors installed (as factory designed), two per side, one before and one aft of the converters in the manifold downpipes.

So unless you removed all O2 sensors, custom mapped and programmed a MegaSquirt computer control system to replace the OE PCM, and went to some other method of fuel trim management that didn't use exhaust gas oxygen levels, uh-huh. Post pics dude.

So ya never go off roading ?

Imagine how the people driving next to him must feel like, with the exhaust fumes going out the side like that, probably into their open drivers side windows.

Nevermind that in many municipalities this would be an illegal vehicle modification.

It kills me how many people think they are smarter than teams of engineers from all over the world.

There is an unmonitored catalyst.
When I ordered a new Y pipe it was a struggle to find one that wasn’t CARB compliant because those one where $$$
The I found the cat is smaller then OEM. the oem one off the old pipe fetched me $40 st the scrap yard tho ....

I put a Thrush welded in a few years ago. Stock 2.5" system otherwise. Love the sound. Best sounding Liberty on the island :gr_grin:

Is this only on some vehicles, depending on market? I have two on my 03, with two O2's before and 2 after the cats. Unless that which I am thinking is the resonator is the un-monitored cat you're talking about and the one that Huzels removed. If so, then he still has the left and right bank primary converters.

To take out that 3rd converter and then route the exhaust out in front of the front right tire, the exhaust would have to make a u-turn and come back up front before exiting to the side... that seems awfully inefficient.

Would still love pictures to see what that looks like.

Yup. That’s the one. And yea I don’t understand either ?
Unless he has it right after where the left side joins the right side and goes into 1 pipe on its way down to the “resonator” part.

The stock muffler on my XJ was too wide and wouldn't fit with the new rear drive shaft so I ran to autozone and picked up one of these for $30

I picked that muffler because it was the only muffler that had multiple tubes instead of flowing straight through. It's very quiet driving, idle is louder but nice and deep.

I should add... the welded chamber mufflers are made from thicker gauge steel, so they take twice as long to rust out.

15 years old, so wondering how long a welded chamber muffler will last ?

Stock had rusted a hole in 7 years. I get ~5 years from the average crimped tin-can style. Welded lasts me longer... haven't had one rust through yet.

I bought an intermediate pipe (downstream flange with about 3 inches of piping on it), and welded on a Cherry Bomb Turbo followed by a 12" glasspack, gives a nice mellow sound. At the moment i have that pulled off to clean it up and lay a nice coat of high temp paint on it before winter, in it's place is the original flange with a 18" glasspack welded on, not near as mellow, give a really raspy sound when you get on it.

I recently replaced my catalytic converter and am considering a catback exhaust that excludes a new converter. So 2 questions. How much money would i save already having a new converter? Suggestions for a type of system?

I ran a flowmaster on the 04 for a short time, hated it, the droning at cruising speed was unbearable
ran a magnaflow for about 190,000 miles wasn't bad
the 03 still has stock muffler, sure is nice to be quiet and stealthy at times

Tailpipe rotted off over the winter. The welded Thrush was in good shape to take another. Painted the muffler with high-heat paint this time.

Replacing my old rusted out, busting at the seems muffler this weekend. I went cheap and got a Walker SoundFX... I just need it quiet for a while! lol Looks like I'll have to cut off the old flange nuts, and then use a sawzall on the welded outlet. I got a 2.25" OD to 2.25" ID lap joint band clamp... but it looks like the OE tail pipe goes to close to 2.5" after the muffler.

We'll see how it goes.

I had a Thrush Turbo on mine, and I liked it, till it rusted out and was leaking. Now I have a CherryBomb. I don't like it, but it's better than the fluttering with the bad muffler and was only $13ish. Didn't have the extra cash at the time. As soon as I can I'm taking out the CherryBomb and getting the Turbo again.

I have a Thrush turbo sitting in my garage somewhere... I didn't want to install that because I wanted an OE fit and sized muffler.. I dont feel like messing around with extra joints and extending the pipe. Might be easier now that I look at how tight the bend is at the tail pipe right after the muffler.

Oh well.. we'll see how it goes.
