Extra set of Teeth by Pinion

I've been curious about the extra set of teeth on the left side of the pinion gear. I've seen it on every rear end I've looked at. I don't know what it is or if it has a purpose. :hmm::think: I finally had to give in to curiosity and ask if anybody else knows what it is and what it's used for.

Surely for the speedometer pickup sensor that plugs onto the diff?

Its the toner ring for the VSS or vehicle speed sensor.

Yep, speedometer gear. And for clarification, that is the ring gear you're describing. The pinion is the horizontal gear attached to the driveshaft.

Thank you. I ended up mixing up the ring and pinion gear (again). My last rwd vehicle's speedometer gear was in the transmission.

heh... looked at the pics and at first was like wait a minute... mine doesn't have that... is something WRONG?!?!? then I remembered mine's an 07 and uses the ABS signals for speed monitoring.

What do you mean? There are digital and analog sensors. Analog generates a sine wave ac signal, and the newest vehicles feature digital sensors with generate a square wave.

I know their are speedometer sensors that are gear driven in the transmission and now inside the rear diff. I don't know if they're in just those two spots or not.

gear driven at trans, gear driven at diff, hall effect pickup (think flying magnets) either in the diff or piggy backing off the ABS sensors... there's all kinds of ways of getting it.

Used to be, there would be a VSS in the transmission/tcase, and then if it had ABS, a sensor in the rear end for it. Now modules network together, so they share sensors. The VSS sensor info is shared with the ABS.
