Yes its the nut attached to the fan that has to be removed to remove the water pump.
I have a mecanical heavy duty cooling system and have been having trouble locating the right size wrench. I had a 36mm but that was to big and luckly I located the right size at Advance Auto. I've also have had trouble finding out the right thread for this nut and was told it was reverse but it is normal thread. After all that trouble and confusion I'm on my way to finally replacing the water pump.
Thanks for your response. I'm new here and think it's a great site with great people.
Happy New Year to All.

nut for clutch fan

I am surprised to see that your 36mm spanner would not fit the shaft on your clutch fan. I recently ground up an old spanner from a junk shop reducing the width and opening the jaws to exactly 36mm, and this is an exact fit to the nut--puzzle for me. barryh
