Hi - I'm sure most have already been through all this but as a new commer to jeep i have a question. My dealer has confirmed that my 2002 jeep had new ball joints fitted at 21044 miles under recall and also claimed that superior parts were fitted as a permenant solution. Is that true and if so is that the end of the matter or has anyone had problems after recall ?

I've only put about 5,000 miles on my recall ball joints but so far, so good. From what I've seen around here, once you get the recall done you should be set for a little while. If not, you can bring it back for another free repair. The warranty repair is covered as well, so if the ball joints ever fail you can bring it back and it'll be covered. You will probably have to go back once or twice depending on how long you own the Jeep.

You can always upgrade to Moog brand ball joints, which are substantially upgraded in quality over the parts the dealer uses. They cost more and you'll have to pay labor to have them installed, but from what I hear they're worth it. I'll keep going back for the crappy ones, myself.

Ive yet to hear of someone having problems with the joints but its only been a year or so since the recall. It will probably take a couple more to tell how the new ones do.

Anything that cannot be greased will fail eventually. Its ok to put a joint like that on a corolla, but something that goes offroad in water and mud needs to be greased.

Thanks for the reply - my dealer assures me new joints are a final solution - but i think i'll keep up on the general maintenance and keep an eye on them for wear and tear as i get the impression dealer fits the same kind of ball joints during recall - anyfurther problems and there's always the Moog upgrade to consider.

I took the first set of replacement joints out of mine and replaced them with MOOG's. The originals seated below the mounting surface they went into, thus allowing water to just sit against the joint. The Moogs have a longer shaft that doesn't let water sit inside there, and they have a grease zerk that lets me know I can push out any moisture that even gets near it! :D

Not sure if there was more than one recall but, I got another notice about it after I replaced them. I ignored that though. ;)
