Gear Oil selection

Regarding the rear axle, the tag on the tube says '8.25'. Its got a open diff. Vehicles got 87,000 miles and I can't say whether the gear oils ever been changed (got it used a couple years ago). No offroading, and no towing. In a Moderate climate for the most part, usually around Northeast area of US.

According to service manual. the proper choice would be dino SAE 75W-90.

Anyone care to recommend a good choice?

At my last driveline fluid change, I used Coastal 80W90 in both of my open diffs (non synthetic.) It is fractionally thicker than 75W90, but either one should be fine for you.

From what I read, non-synthetic gives better protection to your differentials, but costs a tiny bit in mileage (I don't notice a difference.)

If you have the Factory limited slip Trac Lok, Trash Lok what ever don't forget to go to the dealer ans pickup the Limited Slip additive about $10-12 for 4 ounces.

SAE 75W-90 is synthetic. You can "and should" use 80-90. There's many posts gone by that explain why dino oil is better than synthetic in differentials. the thing that ***** is that if you still have the original oil in there it is synthetic and should be changed every year or so. Now, with dino, you can go longer in between.

Yep use dino gear oil only.

I have a $4200 offroad specific built rear diff and the only recommended gear oil is 85w-140 dino,use of any synthetic will void all warranty and has been known to take the pinion bearings out in less then 200 miles if synthetic gear oil is used.

Switched to dino with my Aussie,took a lot of the pop,bang out of it.
