Well I went to remove the bars going around my lights. I was able to remove the guard but when attempting to pull out 2 support bars (going through my grill area) they both broke right off. The bolts holding them in place were 100% rusted and cracked right when I applied pressure with the wrench. Bummer.

Time for an Arb. I feel naked now but think it looks pretty good!

The two bars sticking out from the tow hook region will be used for shackles. These bars are connected with u-bolts into the tow hook bolt down location. They stick out slight passed the bumper and hooking up shackles would compliment the front end.

I've been looking at "blckkj" for years with that guard and it's beginning to look kinda weird...

Yet good at the same time...

Looks good to me! Bummer on the guard disintegrating though. I'm not fully understanding what went bad - the bolts just snapped, or is the entire guard trashed now?

Hey, we'll have to set up a day and meet up for a beer or something. I'd like to check out everything you've done to your KJ, and you can school me a bit ;-)

370 miles on mine!

I'm glad to hear that it doesn't look too bad without the grille anymore. I'm ready to move on now. LOL.

There are two brackets that hold the top part of the grille guard in place. These top brackets come through the grill area and bolt down near the sides of the radiator. The bolt holes were rusted beyond belief and the bolts themselves were rusted. When I attempted to remove the bolts the bolt hole opened up, larger than the bolts, and the whole bracket came off (without removing the bolts first). I went to remove the bolts from the bracket but they snapped immediately. The grille guard is good still, I just need to buy new bolts for the top brackets. I don't think it's going back on as I kinda like the new look.

Yea, Maybe we all good do a Meet n Greet soon. All of us are Me, You, Marlon, and Welby.

Don't be sad. Better for Phil to take it off than it to fall off after rolling over a bad railroad track.... or hitting a pothole on I-96.... or trying to get into Hamlin.... there's a number of things I can think of that would have made that thing fall off! lol3.gif

Do you have pix of where it broke off? I cannot believe the whole thing just fell apart :(. Or is it kind of a forced breakage so that you can get an ARB. Hehe

LOL. No forced breakage. The guard would not of fallen off either. It was the top left bracket that goes through the grille and bolts down. The area around the bolt was rusty and it made the hole larger, no longer being able to hold it down in place. The grille guard was secured by the tow hook points, but these brackets are just stabilizers to keep the top part from leaning forward.

I'll get an ARB one day. As for now I'm running naked.
