HD cooling dual fan question please

Ok, so I have a 2003 that stock HAD an HD cooling fan setup.
That was sometime along the way been removed and a cheap dorman like aftermarket electric only two wire fan has been installed.
I cant tell if there was originally a three wire or original two wire... how was this setup in 2003 HD versions?

Today I found at a wrecker that I can reach with an HD fan setup, but he tells me that it has three wires.

Can I still use this in my rig?

You can certainly use the mechanical fan and shroud (I recommend getting a new clutch).

You could certainly use the three wire fan if your Jeep does have a two wire setup. I would be curious to know how many CFM the single fan pushes compared to the low or high speeds on the two speed fan... I also do not know how many amps the single speed setup is capable of handling as I imagine the high speed on the two speed pulls more amps. What Im saying is, you would probably want to wire the low speed side and see if that would work to keep your Jeep cool. The high speed wire would just never be used. I would watch the temps very closely to make sure the low speed can keep the Jeep cool... It will have the mechanical fan as a backup.

I've only ever heard my electric fan kick on high when the transmission was getting hot (over 200F). Otherwise, it is on low if the A/C is on. The mechanical fan is able to keep the engine below 217F, so the fan never kicks on to cool the engine.

The 2 wire and 3 wire connectors are different shape and won't fit (i found out the hard way). 2003 has a 2 wire fan.

You can also get an HD clutch for your clutch fan if you are worried about cooling issues. I prefer having the 2 fan set up.

His connectors have already been cut off, so that wont be an issue.

Ok, so the fella that has a cooling fan setup sent me pics today of what he has. He does not have the clutch fan parts only the shroud and 3 wire elec fan.
I wonder if this is the standard elec setup...

Can someone verify for me please, is this the Heavy Duty cooling shroud or the standard setup?
its a 2 hour round trip to get this, I really don't want to go and get wrong parts and waste cash and time.

Im going to throw some more odd facts in the mix, thats most likely from a 2004 KJ. For whatever reason, ALL 2004 KJ's came with the bigger shroud like that. Didnt matter if it had the HD cooling package or not, it got that shroud. It really makes changing the oil filter suck.

My KJ is a 2004 and it came with the bigger shroud, two speed electric fan, and no mechanical fan. All I had to do was buy the Mopar fan blades and the clutch.

If rockauto ships up there, they have the fan blades and clutches. You may also be able to get the shroud and electric fan for cheaper?

The mopar fan blades have been out of stock for a bit, but it shows the part number if you want to search elsewhere. Im sure the Dorman unit would be fine:

Pretty sure I used the Hayden clutch. It seems to work perfect and doesnt roar all of the time.

I wonder what the real difference in the electric parts are... why the HD electric has only two wires, just on off I guess, more or less flow than the three wire on high?

That clutch/mech fan is pricy!!

I can get that fan and shroud for $60 cad - so I am tempted to run and get it now that I am confident its the HD shroud...

Can the clutch fan run with the NON-HD fan? If I wire the electric fan to low or high on the 3 pin, can it fit and work reasonably properly?

Goal is to make this rig able to tow a proper small holiday trailer, 17 to 20 ft

Yes sir, you can just add the clutch/ fan blades... Thats exactly what I did on my 2004 and it works perfect. And thats exactly why I added the mechanical clutch and fan, for towing. Another interesting tid bit, the towing package came with a bigger transmission cooler. I finally got my hands on one and its nearly twice the size of the cooler on my KJ. Ive yet to install it and Im not sure if I will. It looks like I might would need to remove the bumper cover and idk if I want to do that.

I wish I knew more and had access to more KJ's to see exactly how they came from the factory. Im just going off of memory from what an old member, TJKJ2002, always said.

The HD and singal fan system both have two wires for the first couple of year. By 2005, HD and standard cooling both have 3 wire, a 2 stage fan. So wire it based on what your vehicle came equipped with. If you have a 2 wire electric fan, I would wire it to the high setting if you have a 3 wire system. But you should also buy new connectors and have it wired properly in the event you need to replace the electric fan

Mine came with standard cooling and I added the HD package. As it turns out my electric fan wasn't working when I got the jeep so I like having a 2 fan set up.
