I purchased my "new" used jeep June 1, 2007 it had around 43,000 miles. Well, Sept 3rd i started having problems and wanted to know if this is normal. I had it towed to my mechanic next evening after discussing the issue on way home (temp gauge over in hot zone) I had at this point roughly 45,575 miles on it. I found i had a blown head gasket. What is the mileage "life" of a head gasket? I was told roughly 100,000 miles. Make long story short--towed in Sept 4 finished Oct 1--they were on backorder. My mechanic told me most dealers & "whoever" else were snatching up the head gaskets like nobody's business, which led him to believe there are problems with it and nothing is being said/recalled.

Thanks for all posts.

Never heard of it. Probably just something a mechanic was making up.

Head gaskets do not really have a 'life.' They should last longer than the jeep itself overall.

it is not a common issue with the 3.7. but you better find out what caused it so the new gasket isn't compromised! mike

same, never heard of head gasket issues on the KJ's before. On some engines its quite common though like the Quad 4's. But my 3.1 multiport FI motor in my other car was almost at 200k on the original gaskets. My moms older car and my neighbors car all used the same motor. My neighbors is at 260k with the original head gasket.

I'd venture to say it's a fluke or something else caused it. If the engine was overheated in the past, it could cause this.

yea, problem with buying used, never know how it was treated. Luckily i got to meet the past owners of the KJ i bought from a dealer and i stood and talked with them for a bit. They seemed to know a good amount about cars and all of the maintance performed so i was confident i was buying a well maintained used vehicle. And so far its been great, passed all inspections, they even filled out the maintance performed in the little book.

Not common with the 3.7. What caused it to overheat in the first place? Blown head gaskets are usually the aftermath of overheating, unless the head was warped or something.

well, at 66,000 miles, i had BOTH cylinder heads replaced under warranty!
a little more extreme than a head gasket, would you say? they said i had LOST compression in cylinders 5 and 6, and i had been throwing codes that said cylinder 6 misfire. thank goodness for the code reader i bought.
