DO NOT over heat it flush out the coolant it should not be brown or clay colored i f ed mine up good by not regularly changing the coolant these jeeps ask for HOAT thats it no universal bs. Check everything for leaks the radiator likes to crack on the upper driver side corner.

Sometimes it's nearly impossible to add water when they're really hot. water goes in, hits steam, belch and blow water everywhere. Let it cool naturally, then add coolant. Bleed valve at thermostat housing after you start it to get all the air out. Keep an eye on it for a few days to see if it's FUBARED, or what/where it's leaking, or if you simply let it get low on coolant. Then fix any issue, flush, and fill with proper coolant type and mixture.

I retract my statement m38bob found some HOAT that says universal. Some people say put whatever 50-50 you can get. I say it calls for hoat thats what i use. I dont know if it makes a difference.

Check your coolant level, ensure your fan turns on (or engages if mechanical), then start looking at the possibility of a radiator clog or a bad thermostat--which are still fairly easy fixes.

Or the coolant. But what is the "clay" part, is it a moisture/condensation/sludge build-up?
The upper left one (production) shows what ours came with. The newer replacement below it (service) is more of a pinkish-light red color.

I think Zerex is still orange/red. Maybe it changes when it gets mixed with water. I have no idea lol.

Of the past 2,187 thermostats I've known of being changed I'm sure there were at least 3 that needed it. One of the most fail proof parts on your engine, I'll about bet there's something else causing the overheat. But, I guess ya gotta start somewhere.

I've experienced a few problems with overheating but mostly I overheated the transmission and not the radiator.
Here's what I found to be causing problems on my 04 Liberty Sport;

I have the Mopar trailer package which means an electric fan and a mechanical clutch fan.
I've had the electric fan twice and the mechanical clutch fan fail once.
My electric fan is two speed and it wasn't hard to apply 12v directly to it to test out the operation. I rebuilt my electric fans using wrecking yard parts.
The mechanical clutch fan should be stiff to turn when the engine is cold.

One day while examining my radiator I was surprised that it was plugged up with mud.
After a flushing of the rad fins with the garden hose my Jeep ran cool.

I've never flushed out my cooling system or changed the thermostat.
Maybe I should before the end of the summer.

Also on my summer ToDo list is a spark plug change.
