Hey everyone! I'm looking for suggestions for HIDs. Not sure what heat I want. I'm thinking 6000k. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should buy them and what exactly I should buy? Looking for a decent price mainly. Also maybe tell me how we connect em? :D

Thanks everyone!

Slightly North of the 49° th. Parallel... In HongC
HID Lighting is not designed for the Liberty's headlamp reflector design.
The problems with HID replacement kits is that they don't reflect the HID
bulb modules light properly and efficiently and spread the light pattern into
oncoming traffic blinding other motorists.
If you really want to upgrade to HID lighting, installing a pair of HID
projector lamp units is the best way to go!
Search this forum to see what other KJ owners have done.

I run 100/80 watt Hella "Off road" bulbs and readjusted the headlamps
so we don't blind the oncoming drivers.
They give off excellent light output

You are better off buying an upgraded pair of 9007 headlamp bulbs.

BTW?

Get ready for the onslaught of comments regarding HID lighting in a
Jeep Liberty!

x2... one of many reasons I am strongly considering an air horn for my Jeep.

Blind me on the road, and I will deafen you.

My best advice would be to find a wrecked audi, bmw, vw, infititi, or range rover and get the entire headlight setup out of one of those (provided it isnt completely destroyed)...then retrofit those projectors into your housings and black out the reflective material so you dont blind people... this way it is done right and your not rolling the dice on an ebay hid kit, the easier way to upgrade your lights would be a high quality halogen bulb such as piaa 9007 xtreme whites...about 70 bucks a pair but well worth it...but whatever you chose to do do not throw xenon bulbs into a halogen housing

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
Its not illegal... Its not like the cops are going to inspect your headlights if you get pulled over. Had HIDS on my KJ for over a year and have never had a problem.
Those retro fit kits are illegal, every one is sold as "offroad use only".The only legal HID kits are those that come with projector headlight housings also and are stamped with a DOT #.HID high beams are also illegal, ones that have a seperate bulb for high beams. The systems that just angle the projector for brights are legal.

Just because you have not been pulled over for running them means your getting lucky, for now.Wait till a cop is having a bad night and those HID's are a perfect reason to pull you over and he has the legal right to.Don't give cops a reason to pull you over.My KJ is pretty modded but 100% legal in every way in the county it is plated in.I do not give them any reason to pull me over if there fishing and HID's are what they look for.I know I have a few buddies that are cops and have field days with those lowered honda's with HID's.Usually ends up costing the owners $1000+ in fines before the tow bill and impound fees.

I've actually seen some decent aiming with HID kits on halogen casings. And it's not illegal (or at least nobody I've known has gotten any shit for them at all.) For instance my friend just showed me them on his Jeep Grand Cherokee. Is it because of the large halogen housing on the headlamps of the Lib? And what if I wanted to put in HID fogs?

If the kits do not conform to FMVSS No. 108 then they are illegal.

HIDs are illegal if not original equipment on that vehicle. Problem is everyone who uses them illegally refuses to read the truth or the law

In 2003 the NHTSA published a notice of draft interpretation for FMVSS 108 which addresses vehicle lighting. That stated (or at least was interpreted) that fitting HID headlights to any vehicle that didn't come from the factory with HID's was illegal.

SEMA pushed for a reinterpretation and in Nov 2005 issued this press release:
http://elitecm.net/forums/index.php?topic=155.0 (Sorry, I can't find it on SEMA's web site)
The actual NHTSA reinterpretation is here:
http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2005/pdf/05-21725.pdf

Unfortunately, I suppose because of "government speak" combined with wishful thinking on the part of some folks, some people, including HID kit sellers, are taking the 2005 reinterpretation as meaning you can buy HID kits and stick them in your halogen housings. A search of car forums will show a lot of people making that claim. However, a careful reading of the above pdf shows this isn't true, despite people's claims otherwise.
But I decided to go to the source anyway, to make sure.

I contacted the local NHTSA office and it took some time, but yesterday I received a call from an attorney in the DC office who works for Steven P. Wood, chief counsel for the NHTSA, the person who wrote the above document.

What he told me was that I was correct, that you cannot buy an HID kit and install it in your existing halogen housing. Howver, if you can find an off-the-shelf DOT compliant HID assembly that you can replace your entire housing with, then you're fine.

As an example, for a Land Rover Discovery 1 you would have to buy HID units that are a direct replacement for STC1237 and STC1238.

Anything else is illegal in all 50 states.

I asked them if they would consider publishing a simplified human speak version and he said he'd pass the request on to his boss.

He also mentioned that they are getting a lot of calls from law enforcement asking for the same clarification, so even if you don't care that all retrofit kits are illegal, don't assume you won't get stopped by the police for it.

In AR our law enforcement stated that as long as they are between 1000-8000k (yellow, white, or light blue) they are legal. Anything dark blue, purple, green, pink, and so on are considered illegal here. I don't have any in my jeep but do in some other vehicles we have and use 4300k and have had no trouble for the past couple years with the law.

Sooner or later they'll start
Plus think of this
If someone has a wreck due to your lights blinding them, they prove it was you, then you will be arrested for causing said wreck since you are driving something with illegal lighting

Or someone takes a ball bat to your lights
its happened :happy175:
