hood release feel

I have always noticed the hood release feels stiff (bought Liberty used), and it releases at the end of the stroke (or, pull, I guess you'd call it). I've tried other Libertys and they feel more precise, not so difficult to release.
I lubricated the latch, it looks good.
Not sure why this thing does this; sometimes the release lever has lots of resistance, and other times it doesn't, and the hood opens with a slight pull (once fully pulled out).
Anyone know, cable or latch problem?
My concern is that it stays latched when closed, of course!

You could try backing off the hood bump stops at the ends of the rad support.

Thanks. I think I see what causes this, though. The lower spring is the tension you feel when you pull the hood release. Either the release lever at the latch is sticking or the spring is binding. Since it feels stiff to use, I'm betting on the lever sticking. Some lube should do the trick. I just must have not sprayed the right spot.

I sprayed lubricant between the latch housing and release lever, fixed it nicely. I have sprayed it (generally) before with no real change. You need to get the lube in between the release lever pivot points.
What happens is this lever gets stiff, probably from dirt, corrosion, old grease, and the release lever stays partially released. The return spring (bottom spring) doesn't always have enough tension to overcome this unexpected resistance.

Take a look at one of these latches, if you are experiencing issues with yours. I found pictures on the web of a new part, to use for reference. The release lever on the latch is the part connected to the cable.

I had to pull mine all the way and then some for the hood to open. I changed the cable and fixed the problem, it's a cable, it eventually stretches making you have to pull more the handle.

My hood latch was all gunked up from mud, oil- wd-40 etc in there. Clean it first before applying oil/grease etc.
LPS Pre-Solve it the absolute best, and makes the Jeep smell nice with an orange flavor! :licklips:

I suppose a brake cleaner would work ok too, but not good for paint.
I few drops of ATF+4 works well around the latch too. :gr_grin:

Im having issues with it not locking.
I've adjusted 9 ways to sunday and it still wont lock. It does go past the safety catch. I have even went as far as buying a new latch. Still, same issue. The hook & latch line up right. It seems like the latch is to far down even when its adjusted as far up as it will go. The bump stops for the hood are all the way down as well.

I may end up going with hood pins if this isn't fixed soon.

Check the cable. It could be not releasing/relaxing all the way to allow the latch to lock.

Stranded cables stretch as the strands break. They break or run out of travel and adjustment. Sometimes the cable housing gets damaged and acts like a spongy spring.

Bicycles, motorcycles, and cars taught me this.

Checked that also. Both new & old latch are in the open position.
I have 1 trick im gona try on the old latch at work. Heat up the heavy a bit to weaken it. Possibly make it easier to latch.
