I got tired of trying to remember which term to use when trying to talk about the suspension in my various cars... shock? strut? lever arm damper? (that would be the MG.) so I've taken to calling all of them 'dampers', since it's technically accurate as to their respective function.

a shock is a single-purpose unit... it's only job is to dampen suspension movement. you can take a shock out and still drive the vehicle technically.

a strut actually locates some critical component of the suspension or drivetrain as well as provides damping for suspension movement. it generally has a spring perch with associated spring and top hat, frequently has a bearing up top to allow rotation when used up front, connects to and locates the knuckle. if you remove a strut you cannot drive the vehicle since you've now removed a critical component.

Well said.
Good explanation.
This forum should automatically do an auto correct when somebody uses the word "Strut" in the Lift section and replace it with the word "SHOCK" in bright Red lettering!!!
Then add this
:idiot:
Then this oneloser.gif

Easy way to seperate a coilover and strut is....................

Strut uses no upper control arm,a coilover uses a upper control arm.

Tommudd. Ever thought of learning how to think before you speak? Maybe learning how to rephrase things before you post might make you seem like less of a dick. As I always appreciate learning new things and being corrected when Im wrong and your simple minded excuse for that did that.... Maybe just maybe you should try a little bit more of a subtle way to explain that.

You asked a question I answered
plain and simple
I have tried for 58 years to be a dick, went to college / held several high profile jobs and guess what I am finally a dick according to you!! :happy175: Didn't think I would ever make it!
NOW back to the subject at hand, it had been explained before in this very topic and 1000 plus times on various other posts.
Sometimes it helps to actually read through the posts and become more in tune with what parts are called.
Before I posted anything back in 2004 when I joined here and LOST, I read through everything so I could ask intelligent questions. Guess what it works!:whip::happy175:
Thank you for your time
