Compared to a ZJ or WJ it's better. Pretty close to a WK...

Really? Even for how small it is...

On a side note, don't think I'm bashing the KJ.... I absolutely love them. If I had the extra $$$ lying around I'd buy one asap :)

It's pretty safe. I think that it got 5 Stars for front driver impact and 4 stars for the passenger.

The KJ is very strong in Front and Rear impact protection.

It is above average in side impact [but that should improve with the side curtain airbags]

I've seen one on it's roof in person and it held up very well

Overall - very strong small SUV.

The KJ is bigger than an XJ in about every dimension and several hundred pounds heavier. An Intrepid hit my KJ from behind as I sat at a light, with the reciever hitch taking the hit. It left my KJ with the rear wheels off of the ground. I put it in 4wd and pulled myself off of the Intrepid. KJ repair bill was $372 and neither I or my 2 yr old were injured. It totalled the Intrepid.

Here is a friends 05'(I think).. She rolled it at highway speeds (70 mph or). Slick road conditions. Seatbelt was on. Took a ride in the gut truck just as a precaution (Her husband works for the responding Fire Dept). She walked out of the ER a little sore with a few cuts and scrapes.. They replaced it with a new one! I would say they hold up fairly well.

Mopar, you should PM the user Towstrap on this board and ask him what he thinks about the KJ's safety.

He rolled his '02 off road at Livingston. Slid about 20' down an embankment into a large creek.

He now has an '05 Renegade.

All Jeeps get 4-5 stars on front and rear end crash test, the KK gets better than the KJ on rear end, hence the redesign. The KJ on side impact with the side air bags gets a top prize, with out the side bags not very good, but better than the new JK, even with side air bags, but as long as the wranglers have removable doors, the side impact ratings for them will always be lower.:D

I can vouch for the front end crash test. The wife was doing 40-50kph in town and an old dude pulled out of a gas station and drove into her head on. No damage to the frame or engine, just the body lights and impact absorber. The wife walked away without a scratch.
