Nope, but why not keep as much crap out of the intake as possible? Why not keep your air filter clean as long as possible? I already installed a 2 micron fuel filter system as well.

Not running below 1/4 tank isn't dirt phobia... Its fuel pump failure phobia....

The fuel pump is cooled by the surrounding fuel, the farther down you go the hotter the pump gets. Funny thing is like every time i hear of a pump failing in modern vehicles it seems like the owner run it down to nearly empty and then filled back up and then it fails. Of course now you have a full tank of fuel to deal with.

Thankfully on the KJ you can replace the pump through the rear floor but still, i have dropped a few fuel tanks in my day, *****. Oh and the last one i dropped, the owner ran it down to the fuel light coming on and still drove the rest of the way home. Next day it wouldn't start, despite putting in ten gallons of fuel from two five gallon jugs, fuel pump was dead.

I know they have done tests on the whole cleaner air theory of a snorkel... But i just can't get past "real world" examples. I know guys that have snorkels, and they replace their filter just as much if not more than i do in the summer time driving country roads.

The other problem is they always have to take the top end of the snorkel off and clean all the bugs off the grille and then clean the whole thing out, they also seem to suck up FAR MORE bugs then i do. One guy with a snorkel that i know, nice rig by the way they have totally custom modified it, his airbox is always full of bugs. Thats always his biggest complaint in the summer, he calls it debugging the ride... He's a computer programmer too which is why he says that... LOL

My front end will be plastered with dead bugs, but not many of them make it into the airbox through that opening between the hood and grille.

Look thats all good, for some its good for others its not, really you either have it or you dont no biggy.

Bugs and very dusty conditions, There's a Pre-filter for that, an oiled foam sock that goes over the head. And it is always wise to use one in extreme conditions with the hat inlet. There are also cyclonic filter heads that use a spinning wind effect for dust and bug separation, these often have a filter in them as well. Right part for the right job.

If somebody is getting more dust in the exact same time and conditions as someone without , I suggest that the vortex is not working correctly in the head. That or they are driving in more dust, or driving longer. Also I have seen poeple that have either placed the hat too far up the inlet pipe, or, cut the inlet pipe off right at the bottom of the hat. It should be clearly visable in the hat sitting up almost halfway it sheilds the intake area. Once again, theres a right way and a wrong way. I have driven in very dusty dirty conditions before and after having the snorkel, and on mine, it works beautifully., regardless of wheather or not it works on mine has no bearing on how it operates on someone elses vehicle. The instant I fitted a snorkel to my V6 it ran better, better pick up, better mileage. I'll be fitting one to my CRD.

Once again nobody is forcing anyone to have a snorkel or not have a snorkel on their vehicle, I'm just a bit sick of hearing that they dont work being their justification as to why not to get one, when in other threads other have said they would get one if it looked better. A decsission based solely on looks over the designed purpose, and if thats the reason, you dont like the look, great dont have one.

I personally dont really like the look of the snorkel, sticking up halfway up the windscreen but then again I also prefer the look of the KJ with the original bumper and a nudge bar over an aftermarket frontbar, but, I have a full steel frontbar because of the dangers of Kangaroos and livestock leaping out in front of me on the highways and outback roads over here, once again , a reason for having it, based on the fuctionality of it. It protects better, gives greater approach angles, and more tyre clearance.

Hmm... Ok... So maybe they need that pre-filter thing on the top of the snorkel instead of just the regular inlet is what your saying? Good to know...

Now if only they didn't look so FUGLY i could get past the idea of using one...

Snorkel seems useless to me... The intake already has a nice setup on the KJ, as long as you don't have water going over the hood, and even if you do as long as its not a lot thanks to the airbox drain your good.

Not to mention if you get into water that high your going to have other problems unless you extend your vents on everything and seal up the electronics.

For ThunderbirdJunkie, who has murdered a few engines because of water ingestion, it is a precaution against his idiocy. At least he won't have to be like budke and spend 5 grand on a new engine if he dunks the KJ in the drink, despite needing to replace other stuff.

Ive had three rigs with snorkles. People misunderstand them. Snorkles arent generally meant for water crossings. Snorkles are primarily used for getting your air intake as far off the ground as possible to avoid as much dust and dirt as possible.

So your saying after installing the snorkel you have to change your air filter more often? That means more dirt being ingested.

That seems to be the general consensus for everyone that i know running a snorkel, more dirt into the airbox, more air filter cleaning or changing. Yet all the experts on the subject say the air should actually be cleaner.

If ThunderbirdJunkie had one of those fancy spinny air doodads on the top of his snorkel, he's pretty sure it would be about the same. He's considered getting one, since the stock Donaldson hat looks kind of wonky anyway.
