How & when do you use the 4WD modes?

I havent used the 02 Liberty in snow yet. whats your method for use in snow?
either street or highway? or off-road snow?

If you have the part time transfer case use it when the road is slicker than snot. IE not when its raining.
Its a real 4wd system that locks front and rear driveshafts.


If you got full time you can practically leave it in.

Also a lot depends on what tires you run as well
personally I hardly ever lock any of mine in unless it is very deep snow or very slippery with ice, no need to
Good tires / driving skills go farther sometimes than 4 wheel drive
Most people today depend too much on 4 wheel drive IMO

Which transfer case do you have first ???

I live in the desert. In the sand and rock crawling I leave it in 2wd till I need it, but I have the Trac lock rear diff. I did a snow trip a couple weekends ago and full time 4x4 was squirly at 20 mph, but 4low ran like a champ in 4 to 8 inches of loose snow.

↑↑↑↑ I heard you guys are getting a little worst weather than usual, with a little more snow. I'm trying to negotiate for a vehicle out there in Vancouver (from home), and I'm hoping for that reason they are having a little more difficulty moving it locally, buying me time for the "wait and see if they come back to me for a better price" game.

I like to use mine whenever I get the chance. Always good to give the transfer case a workout. Mainly in snow.

X2 on that. I use it when I actually need it, then turn it off. If off road, I usually start off in 2wd until 4wd is needed. MOST trouble I can get into with my 2wd, I can get out of with my 4wd. If you are already in 4wd and get into trouble, then what? Low 4wd won't always get you out of it either.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but is there a reason why the light doesn't come on in my dash to tell me what mode of 4WD im in? I noticed the picture above me and mine does not illuminate when 4WD is engaged.

most likely bad sensor or possibly the cable attached to the TF case position sensor fell off(?)
My full time light doesn't come on but the others do.

Do a cluster light test to make sure those indicators are working.

Same here. There were a few days this past week it stayed in 4Hi. The powertrax and trac-lok combo are pretty much unstoppable. :gr_grin: Nokian tires too.

I use 4Hi more than recommended because its more predictable. (Had a bad near-miss in 2wd on a slushy highway) The only negative side-effects I've encountered so far is ujoint wear, and maybe it accelerated UCA bushing wear. I can deal with that.
