If a torque converter fails in the woods, does it make a sound?

What does a failing torque converter sound like? Or trans for that matter? I have a funky sound, only in reverse and neutral. Sounds like something is spinning slowly and rubbing... like a bearing or ???
Oddest part is that it sounds like something spinning and rubbing, even though I'm holding the break and the jeep ain't moving.
Only in reverse and neutral.
Not in park... or any of the fwd gears.

The pumps are a fail point too. I think there's an updated pump. Lots of other moving parts to fail in an automatic... clutch packs, synchros, bands(?), etc...

No shudder to speak of. seems to shift ok without any major slippage.
I'll look into a the pump last thing I'm hoping to deal with is anything that requires a trans removal.

Most of the pumps get changed while the transmissions are out for a new torque converter because nobody wants to pull a transmission twice. The pump is mounted at the front of the transmission behind the torque converter; removal required. Trans-Go shift kits are a common addition too among the CRD crowd.

I've only rebuilt one automatic and that was long before mysterious things like solenoid packs and computers got added. That makes me obsolete and clueless about what's going on inside. My CRD only shuddered a little bit so I haven't done anything besides ease off the throttle and do regular maintenance. A transmission shop might know your noise from experience.
