Are there any known interchangeable body parts between KJ years. For instance, would I be able to fit the grill and bumper parts of a 2004 on a 2005?

02,03 & 04 bumpers and grilles will interchange unless it is from a flat hood, an 05 won't work on an 04

Flat hood? I searched Google Images for pics and didn't see any 02-07 Libertys with a flat hood.

It also looks like the fenders are different.

All body parts from a '02 through '04 are the same, after that it's a toss up due to the whole front end and rockers being changed starting '05 and 2 different versions for '05+(flat hood and curved hood).'05+ parts will not fit on '02-'04's.

Several people on here and LOSTJEEPS have the Renes with the flat hoods

Okay, perhaps I didn't make myself clear. I own a 2005 KJ Limited. I was interested in finding out if the grill, fenders and bumper could be removed and those parts from a 2004 (or 03 or o2) could be installed.

When I search for Jeep Liberty hoods, I don't see any flat hoods for the years 2002-2007. In fact, all my searches seem to indicate that the same hood fits all of those years. What flat hood are you talking about? Am I missing something?

Okay, thanks. I found pics of that model. I don't have a Renegade, I have a Limited.

Simple answer is no, not interchangeable
Has this been tried? I discovered the hood is interchangeable. I'm wondering if the various support parts (grill mounting panel, bumper cover support and retainer and other parts) from a 2004 could be bolted in place of the corresponding 2005 parts.

[EDIT]I must type really slow - another post made while I was replying.[/EDIT]

Your question has already been answered.
Usually, when someone tries to make their question more clear, it is because he or she feels the questions have not been answered or the answers were confusing.

The answer that "an 05 won't work on an 04" confused me because I wasn't asking about making anything work on an 04. The part about "02,03 & 04 bumpers and grilles will interchange" isn't complete either. Not being a body & fender mechanic, I don't know what the parts list would be to complete the transition. I was hoping for as many details as possible and I don't expect there are a lot of people who have those answers.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim, I'm sympathetic to the dilemma as I was trying to figure out if an aftermarket bumper made for an '05 thru '07 would fit on my '03. We could have made it fit but there would have been some changes/mods to make to the grill and fenders and I wasn't willing to experiment.

The challenge with fitting components from the different series of KJ are the subtle differences in things like where the fender meets up with the rocker panels, how the fender and bumper align, etc. I can't say that I've seen anyone on here who's used parts from an '02-'04 on a later KJ - stuff just doesn't line up I'm sure.

Parts may be functional but your Liberty will look like Frankenstein :waytogo:

I'm pretty sure I saw a thread on lost where someone switched their 05 KJ to the Renegade front end...new grille and hood maybe other stuff but 05-07 should work with 05-07 overall.

Really just stop confusing yourself and buy the correct parts.Trying to save a buck and using what might or might not fit is a gamble you almost always lose.
You may be the one confused now. Part of the appeal of JeepKJ Country is the enthusiasm so many of its members have in making modifications to their Jeeps. Now you are telling me to leave well enough alone. And somewhere along the road you thought I was trying to save a buck. :Nonono:

What MIGHT fit is what intrigues me. IF it's possible to use the grill, bumper and fenders from an 04 on an 05, then that makes the use of a wider variety of custom steel bumpers available. That would also mean other front end accessories could be possible.

Conversely, if the front end parts of an 04 (or 02/03) will fit the front end of an 05, then the 05 parts might also fit the older models for those who want to update the look of their KJs. I happen to think the older models have a better look, but I'm stuck with an 05 - very happily so. But I mod everything. More than once, my proclivity to mod has landed me in the pages of a magazine, which is kinda fun too.

Subtle differences might not be insurmountable. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask (after 20+ years of using forums I shoulda known it would hurt someone). I'm counting on the auto manufacturer being the one trying to save a buck by not having to retool every single fastener and bolt hole from 04 to 05.

One guy's Frankenstein is another's Madonna. I've seen a lot of modified Jeeps on this forum that, to me, look the former and many the latter. There doesn't seem to be any difference in the joy and pride the owners have toward their KJs.

Good info, but I was looking to go the other way - not the newer look, the older look.

Thanks all. Maybe I'll revisit this idea in a year or so, when I'm closer to being able to do something that ambitious.

I don't think much is different under the skin....like the backbone winch mount fits KJs and KKs. If you can find a junk yard with an 02-04 KJ in it, it'd be well worth the look. I'd be ready to replace the grill, bumper, possibly radiator supports and the like, fender flares (I think all the fenders should be the same) etc. I don't think it's impossible. I don't see how it could be radically different.

Under the skin is the same but the mounting points are different. These topics have been discussed to death for 10 years now since they re-designed the KJ in '05.

I wasn't able to find any discussion similar to this, but then, the vBulletin forum software search feature has never been very good (I own or manage other vB forums, so I'm familiar with its capabilities - or lack thereof). And unfortunately, this forum doesn't have the Similar Threads feature enabled, which would list several threads at the bottom of the page that the software determined were similar to the current thread.

If you know where to find any these discussions, could you link to some?

Just do it......prove TJKJ wrong. I wanna see that happen.

But I have a 02, 04 and 06. And just from looking at them, there are big differences.

Theres a member on here that has the 05+ grill on his 02-04 KJ.

But if you looking for bumpers, theres plenty of that going around right now.
