Key fob issue

My 02 kj (Gary) refuses to learn any new key fobs. I've tried but everytime it just doesn't. I've even used a dorman obd programmer and I'm still unable to add new key fobs.

All I've managed to do is accidentally swap the active one to a red key fob.

Is there any other ways or some weird trick I'm missing?

I never had any luck getting a third jeep fob to work. That was trying with two good keyfobs and the book in front of me.

Maybe there's a secret missing step?

it all depends on if the 2 fobs are correctly matched, or if 1 is a clone of the other. A local HW store can ‘clone’ your fob and it will unlock / start etc. A cloned fob will not be unique and you need 2 unique fobs for the system to recognize for encoding the next fob.

If you have the dreaded PIN code, a bi-directional scanner, like the launch 431 can match new keys and fobs.

I have that exact one and I've followed everything it said for probably an hour trying to get it to work but gary still refuses.

just for fun, since Gary refuses, have you tried the old battery terminals removed, touched together for about 20 minutes the reattach to try again? There was some merit in doing this as a computer reset. Might work for this? IDK, but I’d try anything once.

How about not getting a keyfob at all when buying my liberty. what is the best route to go other than going to the stealership?

first thing I’d do is to send the vin to fca (fiat chrysler) and get the build sheet for you jeep. You can see if the RKE is installed. If so, the amazon might work. If not, an alarm / remote system will work on some years. The newer, the harder to make it work due to SKIM SKEE issues.

I have RKE. Says it on the window sheet

I have 2 of the gray keys. they don't say Jeep on them though.

No Pin number either

A PIN number is typically needed (on at least some year Liberties) in order for a locksmith or the stealership to make a unique (non-cloned) key. A locksmith with could tell you whether a PIN is needed when s/he plugs in their device to the OBD port and attempts to match a properly chipped key to the system. As stated, if the 2 keys you have are not unique (1 is a clone of another), the trick of getting the car to program additional keys for you will not work. Also realize, I think the Libs limit the amount of unique keys you can have assigned to a given vehicle. Something like four, if I remember correctly.
