Hi all,
I see it's been almost a year.
After looking almost everywhere I could not find a KJ with an open carrier in my part off the world. Looks like all of them were imported with the Trac-Loc.

So, on to option 2.
I finally bought a KK rear end. They are available everywhere.
It came out a 2010 KK and still looking very good. Never opened and the oil still looks good. I wonder how many miles it did before the car was written off.

Took out the centre portion as this is all I need.

I'm extremely happy that the locker fits in this carrier. I did a test fit, but no photos.

I removed the ring gear from the original trac-loc carrier, since ring and pinion are always a matching set.

Happy to report that the original ring gear fits the "new" open carrier.

That's as far as I got. Next step is to get it in the car and set up.
Then we should be good to go.
