KJ transmission ID

Looks like it's time to rebuild my 06 65th Anniversary Edition KJ. I want to make sure I have the right model number before I start calling around for pricing. It is an automatic and has 13 bolts in the oil pan. But maybe someone could post how to ID all the possible transmissions on the KJ so it will help the next person. I know there is a tag SOMEWHERE on it, but I wasn't sure where, and had to head back to the base, so it's not where I can go look at it until I go back home this weekend.

Also does anyone know a decent price range to expect so I don't pay much more than I should, if the extended warranty idiots scam their way out of coverage again?

You SURE it has 13 bolts...?

Your year KJ has the 42RLE transmission - which has 15 bolts in the pan - for the gas engines. If you have a CRD diesel you'll have the 45RFE which has 13 bolts. There are no other automatic transmission models offered on the KJ besides those two.

FYI: 2002 and some early 2003 gas models came with the 45RFE transmission but all gas models other than those came with the 42RLE automatic.

Yep. Already dropped the pan to service it, and saw how bad the ****** fluid looked. Counted 13 holes.

So you have a CRD then?

Only way you can have 13 bolts on the trans pan.

Deleted , I know nothing about the CRD's . Do they all have the 45 transmission if not a manual ?

It's gas. First kit the parts store sold me was the wrong one. It had the 15 holes. After I pulled the pan I saw it was the wrong size. But then I also saw how bad it was so it's going to the shop.

But anyway. It's a gas engine, but 13 bolts on the pan.

Ok. I tried googling it. Wiki says, "The 42RLE comes in 2003.5+ Jeep Libertys......... the 42RLE has 13 bolts and a straight crossmember, ".

Anyone know if it's acute? Matches my 06 having 13 bolts.

The sticky for the transmission ID and filter/gasket type says that the 42RLE is the one with 13 bolts...

It's the other way around actually :icon_wink:. 42RLE has 13 bolts, 45RFE has 15.

Another easy way to determine which transmission you have is by looking at the transmission crossmember. If it's straight, you have the 42RLE. It's it's curved towards the rear of the vehicle, 45RFE.
