Locking Gas Cap

I recommend everybody purchase a locking gas cap. Now that gas prices have offically exploded, especially around here, siphoning is becoming the hot thing. Called around today, Napa had one in stock for $20, autozone would have to order it, but it costs $12. Bought the $20 cause i wanted it today. Would rather spend the $20 and not need it, then to take the risk of not having one and have somebody siphon my gas while i'm at work (park in the back so i'm not able to see it from my office). I'd recommend everybody do the same. You can also purchase them from your dealer for I believe $20 ish....can't remember the price. Best bet is Autozone if you can find them there.

For those who have two KJ's, order it from autozone and you can get a 2 pack for the price of one. (2 for 11.99).

They've apparently updated their site as yesterday I had several different choices. The part number I remember was 5991. I believe you can use the one for an XJ too....same part number. Was looking for one of those and when i did a search on their site yesterday there were the same part numbers for both the KJ and the XJ ones....might wanna look into that.

Probably realized that they were going to be a hot commodity with gas prices skyrocketing.

I bought one

BUT... removed it.. my thought process is the same when I owned a TJ, (left vehicle unlocked, rather sit on a dry seat going to dealership to have things repaired, rather leave it unlocked then have my top sliced..)

Back to the locking gas cap.. bought from JEEP 15 bucks.. it froze up when water got in it.. had to use a cigg lighter to warm the key..(way freaky while I'm standing by the gas pumps... to unfreeze the lock.. PLUS... I'd rather have em syphon gas, then punch a hole in my plastic gas tank to remove fuel.. better to buy more gas than replace a tank..IMO ](*,)

is it really all that common? Figure a tank of gas is still under $50 (I filled up yesterday at $2.45, I think). When they siphon, they can't ever get all the gas, so you'd still probably have enough to get to a gas station. I guess $12 isn't all that much an investment for that protection, but I agree that it'd be a pain to have to unlock it to get gas.

Now, if this were Mad Max style, we could all just booby-trap our gastanks so juice thieves meet an explosive death.

I tried to syphon some gas out of my Liberty over the summer to fill up my lawnmower. I gave up after about 15 minutes. I had a full tank in the KJ, but I never could get the hose down into the gas. ](*,)

Had the same results while trying to get some gas for generators, also tried my Ram and a nephews Silverado, could not siphon out of any of them

Few years back durring a run up in gas prices, I stopped at Wal-Mart one morning for donuts. While standing inside the front door talking to a friend a guy drove up and parked beside my PU and got the 5 gal gas can out of the back of my PU and started pouring the contents into his S10, my friend ask why I wasn't going out to stop him (I'm 6'5") from stealing my gas. I told him I was waiting around for Autozone to open so I could dump the 4 gallons of used motor in that old metal gas can. Lucky for him he did leave my empty can, or I would have had to get it back.

Anyway when I left I drove by him couple miles down the road, his truck was off to the side of the road with hood up. I guess he should had had a diesel. Best morning I had in years.

I bought the mine original from Jeep. It's too bad that it doesn't come with the teether strap to keep it dangling from the door but I modified it by drilling a small hole beside the key and pushed the teether knob into it. It's quite easy but becareful from making it too big, it may set off your fuel sensor.

Ok, I went ahead and modded my locking gas cap. You'll note where the red arrow is, I drilled in that area (on the opposite side of course) with a 7/32" drill very carefully at slow speed. Then just deburred the hole of the plastic "flashing" that was left behind and voila!..a hangy gas cap again. Me so happy. \/ \/ \/

Is there some special reason why Jeep designed our fuel lid to open freely rather than having a lever that pops it open from the inside? Or were they hoping to make extra bucks on selling the locking gas cap seperately? confused.gif
