LTT True Cold Air Intake for KJ's

dont know what its for or was meant to be really. looks sturdy though. maybe its another way to mount or hold lines of some type that my model doesnt have. either way, if you could seal the squarish tube up where its open one could mount some type of intake snorkel (like the one llt is selling) on the outside and just extend the inside to the box. LLTs is much simpler though.

if it wasnt meant to run lines of some kind through, i wonder if a CAI was considered here, but scrapped? who knows??

I believe from what I have heard, that "squarish" thing behing the headlight is the scoop that feeds the CRD airbox. It is a different airbox than the gassers, but many of the CRD guys switch to the 3.7 airbox because of problems with that setup. Not sure of all of the details. Maybe one of the CRD experts will chime in here and enlighten us...

Would the increased air flow make up for the fact that it is drawing from probably the hottest place under your hood? .... I'm not being a smart ass, I looked at these before and that is the question I was left with.

Yeah, with the hot air, but I have done the same thing with a Geo Tracker, the throttle response was better, and I get more HP and MPG. I can always extend two tubes for CIA on each side... They make Throttle Body spacers for these jeeps as well, but are a little pricey... J.C. Whitney had them the cheapest.

........... Just Kidding!! I worked in a mold shop for Jeep inner trim panels and boy did Chrysler have hairy fits for insignificant flash on the inner parts of molded pieces. Cool that you have a machine to do this.

i did a temp test with my k and n filter. temps at the filter rose 20 deg when driving only 25. filter is off to the side with aheat shield. could you do this with your set up at the filter. outside temp was 65ish when i did this. see my post ,,,,did a litle experiment,,,,,,for more details. just curious as to the difference from side and shielded vs above engine and not shielded.

I think there is room to work with under the hood to do what I need, just have to make sure it looks ok. Maybe two small cone filters just behind the grille, then run to the dual intake thing. I have visions, just need application...

Or have someone cut out the center design on the hood, and use a hood-to filter seal with a scoop, or just louvered design. That middle design in the hood is right where my throttle-body is. Cut a portion out, screen, scoop, or louver it, and mate it with two rubebr lips (like the super bee 440-six pack intake), to an intake system, that is connected right there at the throttle body. Can probably use Velocity Stacks too...

ive thought of doing both of those. the hood scoop if fitted right would be very nice and mean looking. i am still putting that suncoast hood on just for looks at the very least. just ordered LTTs design which will be just fine for me, but man a hood scoop of some type would kill!

Ram air does work. You just have to be going in excess of around 300 miles per hour, have a high-velocity fan that acts as a compressor, and have an intake that that gets larger in the interior, not smaller. You know, like a jet engine:

Eh, not a great analogy; Ram Air for an Automobile is nothing like a JET engine, that is chemical combustion, that produces thrust with low or uncombustable exhaust... It does not RAM in by speed of the vessel; it is pulled in by force, squeezed, then exhausted for thrust. You can't compare Ram Air intakes with a Jet Engine. Fuel (a constant) is needed to spin the turbine, it does not spin on its own due to the velocity of the vessel.

Turbo chargers are more like RAM air, it uses the Exhaust pressure to spin the turbine, that forces fresh air into the intake. Same with a Super Charger... Jet Engine? No way... However, mount a JET ENGINE on the vehicle? Well, that's a plus, and you won't need any intake with a real Jet Engine attached, or ram air 'cause you're going fast enough to force air in... You can build 40hp Kerosene turbine engines...

@SDLiberty: That's cool, but that is not a scoop, you probably know, that is a complete hood, and, I might add, not a bad price... I like it...

Look at a Formula 1 car. They have Ram Air and they don't hit 300 MPH yet.
Same with Indy/CART race cars, F3000, Hell, even Formula Ford.
Not to mention Grp.5 like the old Datsun 510's, MG's, MGB's all use their head light openings for Ram Air.

Incorrect. Common misconception. Let this article speak for itself:

Just above the driver's head there is an air inlet that supplies the engine with air. It is commonly thought that the purpose of this is to 'ram' air into the engine like a supercharger, but the airbox does the opposite. Between the airbox and the engine there is a carbon-fibre duct (1) that gradually widens out as it approaches the engine. As the volume increases, it makes the air flow slow down. The shape of this must be carefullly designed to both fill all cylinders equally and not harm the exterior aerodynaimcs of the engine cover, this all to optimize the volumetric efficiency.

Ram Air is a slight misconception, because it is not RAMMED into the intake... Only a turbine can RAM air into the intake. I know what they say about Ram Air, it is deceptive in a way.

Your intake has a Max intake CFM rating. In order to be RAMMED, the air mist be going in OVER the CFM rating. Ram Air in this methodology, cannot work unless you are already moving. From a stand still, to at least 45MPH, air is inducted, it can't be rammed, you are not going FAST enough to ram air down the intake...

What about your radiator in the front of your KJ?
All that air hitting the front of your Liberty at highway speeds... Is that just wind resistance which impedes fuel economy and not "Ram Air" going through the radiator cooling the engine?
Oh I forgot, you have to be doing at least 300+ miles per hour for ram air to work!
Explain this then, how does the radiator get cooling at 55+ miles per hour?
That must be one hell of an electric and mechanical fan! (If fitted)

As we are all saying, SURE, at a high speed, but not from a STAND STILL to a certain speed. In order for RAM AIR to be effective on a vehicle, you have to be going over 60MPH, and that is even if the air going in at that speed, is OVER the Intake CFM at the time.

Also? Your car is continually, at a steady pace, at your 60MPH, intaking air at that speed, while the natural flow rate is at a certain MCF. A human breathes IN and then OUT. What is the CFM that you breathe in while just sitting? WAY lower than a car's intake CFM at 60MPH.

You could also pull in HARD, and match the air coming in, which would be equivalent to a sudden Wide open throttle at 60MPH, like to pass... RAM AIR is not what it sounds like, when you are not using a turbine to RAM the air in.
