cv's

.....knocking from front passenger side when in 4wd is the beginning on mine going bad. Going to be replacing both

have about 3.75 lift in the front give or take .25 depending on side..brands you recommend ?

NAPA remanned if you can find them
Ran them with 4.5 inches of lift no issues ( well when at 50 -55 and jumped it some but not any doing sane things )

thanks tom , was looking into the machined down ones ( hence the title ) but did some more reading and decided against so took it out of my post.

now the dilema of do i swap the front diff out with the 4.10 one now since ill have it mostly there when replacing the cvs

It's most likely your intermediate shaft is shot; rounded off at the end allowing the cv hub to flop around. Been there, had that.

yep 99% sure thats it. It only knocks in 4wd ( its not the front DS ) so its the beginning , thinking of waiting until winter is over but the noise drives me crazy and i need 4wd around here in the winter

Guy down home that I do all the work on his only bought a CV, after telling him to get the intermediate , due to thats what it was . Didn't so replaced the CV for him, week later same noise. Wife told him after over twenty years of Tom doing all your work you think you would listen to him! :happy175:
But got two great meals from her out of it !

when you had that was it 4wd specific ? my kjs been sitting in a parking lot for the last few days while im visiting friends and i cant stop pondering about it...i hate when i cant fix something right away.

anyways im not getting the "typical" bad cv axle clicking especially while in a turn, or at all when in 2wd. Its just in 4wd and sometimes brought on or made worse with or after a turn. and a pretty damn loud clunking/knocking. Both driveshaft cv ends are brand new and its from passenger wheel well or else ds would be the first place i would go.

Guess i wont know until i get in there, just bugs me

Get under your Jeep and grab the passenger side CV where it goes over the intermediate shaft. A little play is normal, shouldn't make any noise. When mine went bad, there was a shit ton of play and I could perfectly replicate the clunk/pop it was making. Another signal I had was when going 65-80 on the highway there was a sound and vibration that was just like an out of balance tire, but balancing never fixed it.

The clunking was worse when in 2wd. Putting it in 4wd put force on the axle so it wasn't free-flopping as badly, but the noise/clunk was still there.

hmm interesting mines the opposite, i think the torque put on it in 4wd is making mine flop. either way ill be back to the kj tommorrow and be able to fully inspect. The noise is definitely from passenger wheel well but sound can travel, hope it isnt transfer case
