Making a 2wd Liberty 4wd

Hardest thing would be the tail on 2wd vs 4wd transmission is different

You have to remove the ****** and tear it apart(all of the way).When you get to the rear output shaft(the last part to come out) you need to replace it with one from a 4WD ******(same model and vehicle),put ****** back together and put the tail cone from a 4wd ****** to.Lots of labor for one little part.

Don't know what type of off-roading you had in mind, but an Limited slip or locker in the back and a little driving technique will take you a lot of places. A winch will take you the rest of the way!

In the mean time, you'll save a ton of $ and you won't have your wheels out of service for a looong time.

Oh yes, you'll need skid plates, tow hooks and don't forget the badge! All these items will relieve you of a few hundred bucks so you don't have to worry about it burning a hole in your pocket....

Thats crazy I didn't realize I had to do that much stuff to the ******. I guess if I was dead set on making it a 4wd I would have to find a good running, cheap, used 4wd ******. I don't to have to pay all that labor costs especially if me and friends can install a lot of the stuff

Your looking at around 4500.00 in parts plus labor if your not doing it yourself

Imagine dropping in the Hemi, that would be crazy. Cause of the KJ's light weight I think it would be faster then the SRT8 Grand Cherokee.

Hi folks,

First time poster here - but am I glad I found this site.
I will be doing a 4x4 swap in the next few weeks - and as I "appear" to be the first, will write a few notes and take pics.

I know many don't see the point, but our liberty is a 2002 and is a 'prior salvage' hence is not exactly high on the 'resale list'. It has also done 150k miles, and the trans has started shifting 'harshly' in the last few months.

So - I'm sure you can all realise that when I was offered ALL the parts to convert my '45RFEd' Liberty to 4x4 including the trans with transfer case, rear driveshaft, front driveshaft, trans crossmember, front 'axle', front driveshafts, transfer shifter assy, etc for the grand total of $1200, it was worth taking the plunge - especially as it came off another '02 that had done just 38k...

So - I'll keep you informed. Of course, if anyone else knows someone who has done it, then let me know

btw - the only thing I don't know, and can't find any reference to is what axle ratio's were fitted to the 02 3.7's... Were they all the same?

The axle ratio you get depends on which engine you have.

2.4L - 4.10
3.7L - 3.73
2.5L (D) - 3.73
