Heres a question;
I came from a Honda Sports car. This little car was happy at 4000 RPM. So I was astonished when a friend of mine said the Jeep Liberty was fine at 1500 RPM at 50k an hour. But it's true, the engine has way more torque.
Now every once in a while I want to punch it; to merge or pass some loafer. I have only 6k on the engine and it seems to snap right up to 5000 RPM then back down when passing. Is this okay for a V6? I heard from the same friend that I should be careful as this is not good for a big block.
Is is safe for the engine to go this high once in a while?

Thanks in advance for any help/comments!

Once...in...a...while... it is OK, but I wouldn't make it routine. You'll find most people don't rev up past about 3K. The Libby's not known for acceleration, but it has decent torque on the low end.

Just dont do it everyday. Its ok to do it when its needed(merging) or once in awhile for the heck of it.

The red-line is around 5600rpms I believe. I usually hit around 2500-3k when accelerating if I need to go but other than that its <2500rpms. If Im on the hw going 70mph and it down-shifts it hits 3500rpms but there isnt anything I can do about that. If I know its going to stay in 3rd for awhile(big hill) Ill turn O/D off so it locks the torque in 3rd. This lowers the rpms at 70mph in 3rd to 3k or so.

The 3.7 with the 42rle ****** with be right at 1800rpms at 60mph.

When did Honda make a sports car?:D The 3.7L is not a big block. A Chevy 454 V8 is a Big Block. Hitting close to redline is the same in basically every car. Once in a while is good for the engine, at least not very harmful. All day everyday is a shortcut to a new motor.

X2. About once a month i'll hammer it through first gear and run it as high as it will go, just to get some of the crud out from babying it so much. Other than that, I drive very conservatively.

Oh it's certainly not slow... and you're right about it fitting the average size person.

I saw a dude who was at least 4" taller than me get out of one at work, I drove it to the garage and was happy I got out of it! That was a serious PITA, lol.

I don't know how he does it...

I floor it almost every day, if not everyday at least 2-3 times a week. With regular oil changes and good maintenance, I don't see why it should be a problem. If it was a problem they would have stopped the rpm at 4k. I love it when I am doing 50 and it is in overdrive, and I floor it, it just revs like an idiot, standing there, then suddenly speeds up.

My 3.7 sees redline at least 10 times a day,it has been that way for the life of the engine with 62,000miles now with zero problems. My KJ is 1500lbs over stock and needs all the grunt it can muster to get moving here at 6000' going through the mountains. The computer limited redline is there for a reason and there is no problem if you hit that redline as often as you want with a good running engine with good maintance done to it.You could hold the throttle open and sit a redline for over 200hours and be fine. When they tested the 3.7 during prototype they ran it full throttle for more then 500hours at least at full throttle.

Nothing wrong with that. You won't hurt it. Red line is at 6k (at least on my tach) and even then you wouldn't hurt it. You just use more gas, but you accomplish your objective (passing Mr Pokey).

As to honda sports car (?) or your friend that considers a 3.7L V6 a big block. Just don't listen to him as the the 3.7 is at least 2 cylinders and 300+ ci short of a big block.

The term "big block" and "small block" have nothing to do with cubic inches of the engine or the # of cylinders it has.Granted most "big blocks" are V-8's.The term "big blocks" came around when the blocks where casted at much greater size, for extra abuse like a diesel, for use in HD trucks and found there way into muscle cars from the massive torque and HP with very little mods.

Case in point the 330-455 Olds V-8's are "big blocks",yes a 330 cubic inch V-8 is a big block. But all Chevy 350's are "small blocks",Chevy also has a 400 "small block" and a 400 "big block".If you look at a Olds 350 and a Chevy 350 you will see the massive difference in "block" size but they both displace the same cubic inch. There is no "big blocks" in production these days, even the Chevy 8liter V-8 is still a "small block",based of the 4.8,5.3,and 6.0 V-8's.Even the Viper V10 was consider a "small block".The days of the "big blocks" are all but gone when the Chevy 454 was dropped in '99.Not even the new deisels are considered "big blocks" anymore after Ford went to the 6.0 and 6.4 Powerstroke.
