Metal screen behind glove box

Is it supposed to come out? Or does it just stay in place? I can't remember for the life of me.

Only part that comes out is the cabin air filter below the windshiel cowl

It doesn't as far as I know, only the plastic one behind the glove box?

Thats where it pulls air for the AC and Heat when you set the dial to recirculate. I've been tempted to try to figure out how to fit a replaceable filter over it.

Just use a shop vac to carefully vacuum the screen behind glove box and the other one below the windshield cowling.
Ya no cabin air filters, just interior dust from outside..:emotions34:

Yes-The plastic windshield cowling is easy to remove, lift hood, a few of these plastic clips pull up..

Then lift it up a bit and disconnect the washer fluid feed hose from underneath.

Then bend it slightly to remove cowling from from under the hood area, set aside.
Mine was kinda dirty, a moth and other debris stuff.

Cleaned the screen area with vacuum, screen gave it a light toothbrush w/ soap & water or simple green etc..
I can have the cowling off in a minute now...

You have to take the wipers off I presume?

Ya oops you have to remove the arms yes...
Remove the black plastic round cap, remove nut inside.
Spray penetrating fluid in there and pull or pry upward to get arms off.
OEM windshield has alignment marks for blade re-positioning.

Or can use a marker dot at blade end.

Yep wipers definitely need to come off. I cut out some charcoal filter material and put it over the under-hood part. The air coming in to the interior has smelled a little cleaner since then. I check it every oil change.

It's a metal screen,not a cabin air filter.Just keeps large trash from getting into the fresh air intake and killing the blower motor.

Most of us have quoted it as being a cabin air filter. In essence, it is jeeps stuff out of the hvac

I haven't taken a close look at that metal screen behind the glove box.
Is there room to possibly fab something to put a filter on it?

I take it this is the 'filter' for the recirculation mode?
