We used those split-Fire spark plugs on our Boat engine and never had a problem out of them. Thing actually seemed to idle smooth with them.

I have to admit, 12-14 mpg seems a little low. My 2002 with the more-trucklike gear ratio gets 15-16 mpg city and 20-21 highway. That's with over 100,000 miles and routine RPMs up to 3K to 4K. It doesnt sound like you have a lift or anything that would cause a lot of drag.
