I am keeping my Liberty stock. I was told that I needed new struts and coils by the front end specialist (thought I had an alignment problem). I needed to know what size I needed. The choices are 13” w/ 4 1/8 travel or 14”. w/ 4 1/16 travel. So what would be a good choice? Both are Monroe brands.

Well being there aren't two different lengths when it comes to front shocks. We that are lifted wish there were. And yes the KJ uses a coil overs shocks not struts. Vehicles with struts don't have upper control arms. Vehicles with upper control arm use shocks.
Now the only thing that is different is the spring rates. When bought separately the driver's side spring is stiffer by 75 pounds. But when one buysit as an assembly. You get the weaker passenger side spring on the driver's side. If you look up the shock assembly part numbers for a rwd and a 4wd. You will get the same assembly for the right on both and same on the left. But when you look up just the spring part numbers. You will see they are different for the 4wd and the rwd. The shock manufacturers do this to save money on inventory. So to get it to really sit level from side to side. The components need to be bought separately not as a unit assembly.

Or just use a clevis lift to balance it out. I'd feel funny running 2 different spring rates up front, I've never heard of that till now. Not disputing it. I'd just buy the assemblies and then add a bit of clevis lift on the driver's side. Or leave it. The factory didn't use different rates or clevis lift, so if you really just want to replicate stock, get the assemblies and run no clevis lift.

Yes. The factory did use a different spring rate on the KJ's. The driver's side left is stiffer do to the added weight of the battery, front differential being shifted toward the left side as well as the front drive shaft and the transfer case hanging over on that side. Here is a replacement spring for the KJ.

if your going to buy monroes buy the better brand, the reflex or spectrum. The monromatic ones are garbage.

Personally if you want stock, i'd buy ome 925's and some bilsteins and 947's for the rear and call it done.

It will be ~1 inch taller... Than you should have been when new and ride a million times better.

I'm still waiting for OME to make shit for my minivan.

Like has been mentioned there is not two different lengths
One size fits all
There is nothing out there as far as replacements that I would consider good. Like some one mentioned best bet would be 925 OME springs which are rated at 350 lbs, stock was 310. Then 947 OMR rear with either Bilstein or OME shocks . Way way better ride and over all control from even brand new stock
Monroe is middle ground as far as quality and that is their best ones

The front coils have the same spring rate when buying OE or aftermarket(depending on option of 2wd/4wd and CRD).

Even OEM coils are the same rates between left and right, maybe the same part but have different part #'s.This is very common for OE suspension parts for most brands.

Your theory puts Limited KJ's with 4wd,tow package, and offroad package front coil as high as a stock CRD coil.

I've installed many of the monroe "quick struts"(hate they call them that when they are not struts) on stock KJ's and they do okay, they don't last any longer then OE stuff just remember that.

If your not keeping long term then go for it,if you plan on keeping for sometime I'd go the the OME 925 front coils,OME 947 rear coils, and matching OME shocks as they will last and ride 100000% better and this is from someone that hates OME shocks(there coils are top notch).Sure your sitting 1" higher but that is hardly noticeable.

Thanks for reading .............
not to be an ***
But Monroes are not even up to stock specs really, they are only middle ground when it comes to shocks
I have a full set front and rear with Monroes " so called best " shocks
Guy had them for a week , even after me telling him he would not like the ride.
Week later removed them and replaced with OME/ Bilstein
Happy customer after that and I am stuck with complete front and rear setup laying in the garage ( well he gave them to me but........)

Oh well install the Monroes , be happy

Monroe makes two grades of complete "strut" assemblies. The "Quick Strut" is the higher grade. 171577L and 171577R. Check out Rock Auto for some others like KYB and Moog.

And those are what are out on the shelf in my garage
although they did bring his up to stock height, ride quality and handling was , well ,...lacking .

Just like stock... :happy175:

So very true , never could understand why they put such weak springs under these. But then 97% of all the vehicles I've owned I have upgraded the suspension one way or the other

Are you guys sure about the springs being the same on both sides? I never paid attention to the OEM ones on my gasser but a friend mechanic called me once to ask just that question. He said he had a CRD in his shop and the front springs on that were different length. Yet it was sitting level. So what's the chance there really are different sp

I know my pre-built KYB front shocks came with Left and Right marked.
I really did not see why there would be a difference. Maybe it was the spring rates left to right.
or maybe there was a top bearing plate bolts are different pattern front to rear and the the new assembles came "indexed"

Coils will sag over time and one side will sag more then the other due to engine torque.

They all come left and right marked,I've installed hundreds of "quick struts" and every single one is "left" or "right" marked even when they are identical from side to side.

Thanks, sounds good. I really have no idea how long I'm going to keep it. I still enjoy driving it to work everyday.
