Hi all. Lurking for a long time but never had any real knowlege to help. But I'm learning alot! Thanks!

2007 KJ with 101k miles and the Selec-Trac case.

My KJ front wheels now sound like they have the loudest tire whine. Like they're in 4wd on summer pavement. Or like I have big lug AT tires. Or its a loud gear whine up front.

I have OEM-size Goodyear Comfortread Touring on there and they have been noise-free for 20 k miles.

My case lever and idiot light all indicate things are going on and off but I don't feel enough of a difference in driving on pavement to say its turning off. The tire whine or gear whine never stops.

Suggestions as to where to start the diagnostics? Thanks.

Is it in 4WD? Like can you make a sharp turn? Does it feel like it's binding?
If no any of those, sounds like a wheel bearing going bad.

She seems to make sharp turns fine. No binding so its not in part-time mode.

I'd hate to wait for it to go bad to be sure but only to find out its in the diff. Hmmmm.

I doubt you're in 4WD...I'd bet money you're not. Possible things to check:
1. Wheel bearings
2. CV joints- specifically front driveshaft transfer case end

If those things check out good, it might be time to dig deeper, but those are all good starting points and resolve most issues.
