I think the big difference is the transmission
The 45RFE is a "truck" transmission
The 42RLE is a "minivan" transmission
No ever plans to tow with their minivan
so the transmission is not geared for that
This is also what makes them not so good
Off road

BINGO!! :peace:

IMO the gear spacing on the 42RLE is all wrong for the KJ - especially for towing. Before the engine gets into its best torque band the ****** shifts up to the next gear. Even pulling uphill it wants to jump from 2nd to 3rd - to say nothing of when the torque converter decides to go into lockup.

What the *#(%@^ was Jeep thinking from '03 onwards with the 42?

I dont know what they were thinking but in retrospect I would rather have this ****** with its little oddities than have what Chrysler usually puts into its vehicles. This ****** is reliable, most of past vehicles chrysler made cannot say the same. There are a few exceptions but I really like this unit.
As far as towing, how often do we tow? 1 day a week or maybe two if going somewhere, I think the Liberty is fine for what it does, anymore you would need to shell out big bucks for a diesel that really would have to be worked in order for it to pay back

wonder where the NSG370 fits in there? :D
I mean it's used in the jeep, some of the trucks, and the Crossfire.

According to the regulations I just checked on the Brake Buddy site: any trailer with a gross weight greater than 1500 Lbs in Tenessee requires brakes and a breakaway device.

That may be for commercial use.

Saving $$$$$,a $2500 trans compared to a $3500 trans.

As far as the NSG370 goes it's a light duty manual trans and has a rated input torque rating just barely over the peak torque the 3.7 produces so not any better then the 42RLE.If I remember right it has a rated input torque of 271lbs-ft.The weakest link with it is the clutch, way to small.

I will only assume you never owned a pre '03 wrangler
Not a CJ
Those all cam with the TF9XX
And the last version was the TF999
which was dropped in '03
Not a complicated trans
Not a HD trans
But in a wrangler the only way to kill it was with water
Extending the breather requires dropping the trans

The 42RLE ***** off road. Loves to overheat with the stock stand alone ******
cooler half hidden behind the front cross member.
I find first gear isn't low enough in four low. Even with 4:10's fitted.
Rubi Crawler next year.

I guess. but I gotta tell you, the combo of gasser and the NSG370 tows ALOT more than I ever expected to get away with. Time will tell obviously if it holds up but it's not giving me any indications of being annoyed with the tasks I ask of it.

I can tell the 5 speed in my wife's Pathfinder
What gear to go in
I can do the same for my TJ but it only has 3 choices
Her old VW had a 6 speed auto and you could shift it
and if I try I can shift my F250 1-3 then I have to let
it take over for 4&5
So even with a modern auto if it is geared properly you
can over come shift patterns that are set up for economy

question is how nanny state is the TCM in the vehicle. some don't give you that kind of control and some will override you regardless of what you ask of it. I might work in technology, I might make my living from technology, I might even enjoy technology, but I sure don't trust it. Call it what you will but the Ghosts In The Machine have been growing stronger.
