Got an '02 libby with the 3.7. The oil pan gasket is leaking. Whats it like to change one? I am a beginner in the mechanic department and could use some advise. Thanks

The engine needs to be pulled or the cradle needs to be droped to replace the oil pan gasket on a 3.7 in a KJ.

i havent looked at replacing that gasket or the oil pickup...as i have yet to really look at all of that stuff in detail (no need yet). with that said, are you serious? i need to look at that asap just in case i need to ever do that. that seems a bit ridiculous if you are being real. not your fault of course, but bad design.

as you know probably from reading most of my posts...im very used to working on older model engines and such. maybe i should have bought 2 mint condition 70 ford pickups vs this one jeep if thats the case for a simple oil pan gasket. i am a bit worried now for what might lie ahead down the road if i am short on funds, hopefully not though.....

Nope not joking. The cradles lower cross supports do not allow the oil pan to be dropped far enough to clear the oil pump pickup. So basically you need to pull the engine or drop the cradle, both are complex jobs.

Maybe you can snug up the pan bolts enough to stop the leak.

This may seem like a cob-job, but I've seem people clean the outside of the two components and then apply expoxy to the joint. This only works if there is no pressure put on the gasket, such as an oil pan gasket.
