BMW has an Onstar too. Jerry Seinfeld had a funny routine about all that technology to keep us from locking our keys in our cars, he said it should be called moronstar...

I think Ford's SYNC has a crash sensor. Don't remember where I heard it, maybe Motortrend. Maybe it's that's easier to install than Onstar.

Yeah, it's hard to see the benefits, especially assuming you already have a cell phone and a GPS. About the only thing is if you get in an accident and are unconscious for a long time and nobody saw it - all 3 seems unlikely.

Except around here. If you drive north through the mountains there is a 120 mile stretch of no cell phone coverage. Nothing but mountains and exits are 30 miles apart. People have driven off the mountain or into a ravine and nobody sees them and they die. The last one was a man and woman who went into a real deep culvert in the mountains and were found 2 days later. One made it but said she could not get out of the car due to injuries and could not make a call on the cell.....husband was alive for the first day and died the second before anyone knew they were there.......no service.............darn greenies fighting through the courts to stop cell towers.

I had Onstar for several years in a Z71 Silverado and although I never needed it in a emergency situation, it did come in handy a few times. They can run diagnostic tests if you find something not working properly while you're driving, and let you know what the problem is. That feature alone makes it a nice to have when arranging service at the dealership.

Amen to the mountains comment. I was driving back from Plattsburgh in bad weather just a month or so ago and was REALLY hoping I didn't crash. Shroon Lake was AWFUL driving...and there is ZERO cell service right in that area =[[

Yea, you are back in the "stone age" on that drive. Real beautiful though in good weather. I was up there about 3 weeks ago.

They were supposed to have the emergency roadside phones working again. Did you notice they put solar panels on them?

OnStar Goes Aftermarket

by PAUL STENQUIST, NY Times

At the Consumer Electronics Show on Tuesday, General Motors announced that it would offer its OnStar safety and connectivity system to owners of non-G.M. cars.

Packaged within a rearview mirror, the OnStar aftermarket system will initially be available through Best Buy for $299, not including installation and a fee for the service. G.M. said installation is expected to cost from $75 to $100, and service plans begin at $18.95 per month, or $199 per year.

Doesn't On Star require cell service to work properly? IE, if you crash in a remote area with no service, you are still SOL.

Sat communication,no cell tower required unless you want to use the cell phone part of the service.

Just remember the aftermarket version of OnStar will not have most of the functions as the GM OE installed version.

I'm glad that I don't have OnStar. Makes choosing the spots I use to dispose of the bodies somewhat more reassuring when I know that no one is watching me.

Wonder if Tony Soprano's 'hoe/burban had OnStar?

I'm not too keen on the whole idea. Sure it has some good points but it's too close to SkyNet and I really don't like how that one turned out.

They had retrofit onstar kits at my local Dodge/Jeep dealer.

You can get a mirror from Best Buy or a lot of other retailers I believe, but it's just going to give you directions & connections or the emergency crash response. You won't have the full benefits of a GM OnStar system.
