Sorry if this is considered a treadjack but I'm also looking at getting an '02 liberty sport. I already own an '04 lib sport so I was wondering are there any real differences mechanically or otherwise? I really don't like to buy anything of the first model year but the price has me interested.

Thanks.

Different transmission than your 04
" was" 3/4 of an inch higher when brand new of course its more than likely at least an inch and a half lower than that now

Thanks. Looking at different threads here that seemed to be the only real difference. The '02 I'm looking at has a manual gearbox (one of the reasons I'm interested in it) and almost no rust. I'll still get it looked over but auto trannys seem to have been bad luck for me the last few years

She seems to be running fine after her close call. Next is to drain and refill the coolant, change the trans fluid which will take care of the leaky pan gasket and install the new Strong arm hood supports I just picked up. Yes, I did grab the Zerex G05 coolant!!!

Friend took it in to have the front end checked out today. They said everything is solid including the ball joints but I still hear something clunking around when hitting bumps. Gonna check it out when I get back up there in a few weeks but any ideas? Maybe strut noise?

Might not be the trans pan leaking the sensor on the passenger side has a tendency to leak mine did and i thought it was the gasket as well but once i put new atf4 in it was clear to me where the now thinner trans fluid was leaking from the sensor is near the rear of the trans pan on the passenger side like i said

Thanks J. Gonna be back up at the cabin in a few weeks and will take a look. Plan is to degrease the heck out of her and see exactly what's leaking. Also gonna change the fluid in the Trans, transfer case, cooling system and both diffs. Does the Liberty have a few grease fittings???? What about hitting the ball joints with a grease needle???

Making a hole in a perfectly good boot defeats the whole purpose! If it's already torn/leaking you can't get grease where it needs to be anyhow. If it ain't leaking the original lube is exactly where it's supposed to be.

I agree with bob i wouldnt make a hole the grease in there is non serviceable. To the first question. There are no grease fittings. If you want to help prevent damage on any rubbers. I usually use a high grade silicone spray grease. This helps keep all rubbers fresh and flexible. This will help with cracking or tearing from age.

The build sheet will tell you if you have a limited slip if i remember correctly. Search for the thread required fluids they have info for diff fluid there.

80w90 should be absolutely fine in both diffs.

If you do have limited slip, you will have to put the additive in the rear diff.
