They got the hitch in the next day and I got it installed today. They were sure to include a paper that said I should not tow anything with my vehicle, because this was not the tow package, it was just the hitch, and that they do not recommend towing without the tow package. I know they have to cover their a$$ but wow. They do not issue a paper with any other vehicle that was sold without a tow package and a hitch. Why would they say that? Did they give me a hitch that is not sufficient for towing? I highly doubt it.

I think other members have posted that it may be due to the fact that your KJ may not have the HD cooling for towing. However, there are members who have towed without the HD cooling with no issues.

Towing without an external trans cooler is a huge risk. I remember a thing we used have customers sign and we would stamp when I worked for U-Haul installing hitches, that we assumed no responsibility if they blew out their transmission towing because they did not put an external transmission cooler on during hitch installation.

Aye on the transmission cooler. Fortunately for myself, my Liberty came with it even though it did not have the factory hitch or complete tow package. Needless to say, before my big trip last week I looked in the manual to be sure what the Transmission Temperature light looked like and kept an eye on it the whole time. I wish my add-on gauge widget for my Garmin had included that as an option. I'd rather see the temperature and find out if it was rising before the idiot light came on. Luckily, I had no problem whatsoever with the temp.

07s came with an external Trans cooler but not the radiator Trans cooler. 06 & 05s as well I believe.

I'm only pulling a 15' aluminum boat wit a 30HP Yamaha motor. Some fishing gear and maybe a ice box. Of course safety gear too IE: Fire extinguisher, life jackets etc...

I havent seen anything about "not being a hitch". Ill have to check the recall notice tomorrow when I go to work. As far as I know there are 2 tow ratings. One with cooling package and another without.

Checked the recall and it refers to it as a hitch about 20+ times. Nothing about not a hitch. Only thing I see they may be confusing is there is no wiring installed. This is just the hitch.

Wiring & brake controllers are separate. The factory hitch is good quality!

I dont have the HD clutch fan but have cooler through rad & electric fan.
Now if only we could put a manual switch on it to command high speed at will.
Or reprogram for the fan to go high speed at 212F instead of the 227F I believe it is.
Oh ya the dreaded Trans Temp Light.

I did not even have to pull anything to see it glow off road in the 85F+ days in the summer. Just electric fans and coolant hot at 230F & I knew that I had just had a Dealer cooling flush done.
I decided a 1.5 quart over stock PML aluminum transmission pan 42RLE was in order.
Also a bottle of Lubegard Red transmission Protectant helped keep it cooler.
Now no lights even when pulling the 3500lb boat for 400 miles this summer!
After the return 800 miles pulling though, I still pulled the drain plug on the trans pan (nice) and refilled it with fresh ATF+4 and more Lubegard red. Jeep seems happy now.

I think the non-HD cooling package E-radiator fan has 3 lines to the fan.
One is hot to high speed, one is hot to regular speed, and one is ground.

You can rig up a SPDT switch to control the speed of the E-rad fan.

That is definitely worth investigating.
You know you are the first person to mention this!:waytogo:
I wonder if that may trip a code or something.?
So I guess the switch would just bring /jump power to the high speed then?

Yeah. you could power it straight from the +12V, however, you would be by passing the control logic of the jeep to when to set it to high or low speed based on whether the AC is on and/or the batt. temp. sensor.

I doubt that it will trip any codes since there is no feedback from the E-rad fan to the control unit.

Here's a wiring diagram for an 04.

Ya I am no electrical specialist but it appears the pcm commands the flow direction though the relays to decide which side, high/low gets juice.
Hmmm....I dont think I would suddenly want to push power though to the high speed on that circuit, without consulting someone that really is in the know..
Nothing worse that something going poof! LOL...

okay. Here's a free consultation from me.

Get a 3PDT or 4PDT to wire this.
Here's a list you can choose from. I don't know what the load of the fans are but since the fuse is 40A, one of those switches on the top of the list w/ 30A should do.
Toggle Switches | Switches | DigiKey

Here's what you would need to wire up.

Basically with the switch toggled in the picture's current state, it will operate as normal. When you toggle the switch (switches move to the right), both +12V for the low and high speeds from the relays are disconnected from the fan and a direct +12V will be connected to the high speed input of the E-rad fan.
This way, you can maintain normal operations and trigger this when towing.

What speed comes on when you turn on the a/c? And being an 03 I only have 1 speed so if it gets a little warm I turn the a/c on.

A 2PDT will work, connect fan to common and have it toggle between "normal" and connecting 12 v to high fan only. I used a DPDT relay at fan area and just ran to SPST switch to control the relay--less wires to run.

Along the lines of the recent comments, is there a way to add a gauge to show the actual Transmission Fluid temperature? Relying on the idiot light alone makes me feel kind of like...an idiot.

I installed a Trans. gauge(autometer) along with a PML aluminum transmission pan. I just had to tap and thread the pan for the sensor.I believe with the steel pan a threaded insert(bung) would have to be welded to be able to thread in the sensor.
