Propellor Shaft CV joint removal

Hi,

I was able to drop the front propeller shaft for my Jeep Liberty. The problem is the rear CV joint has a broken boot, and stuff got in there. So now I am trying to get the end cap off the the rear CV joint and it will not budge. Is this, "end cap" actually screwed on somehow? So a special tool might be required? If
no special tool then how do you get it off?

Have you removed the snap ring yet?
If not remove it and then should slide off

When I replaced mine, the hub didn't want to slide right off the shaft, it needed a good amount of coaxing with a hammerfer.

Hi thanks for the reply. Maybe I should upload a picture here of what I am trying to pry loose. I don't know where this snap ring is in relation to where I am using a screw driver and a hammer. But I am working at the very end of the CV joint and placing the screw driver where this outer end cap ends and the next one begins.

OK so you have an end cap that has to come off, it just prys off don't worry about destroying it
Then clean any remaining grease/ dirt out away from the shaft, you will then see the snap ring
remove it then slide the old CV off of the shaft

yup. just use a chisel or a flat screw driver w/ hammer to get the cap off.
Then you'll need a pair of snapring plier to get the ball bearing assembly off.

Hello,

I hope this might help someone else. Where I was striking the CV joint with the flat head screwdriver and the hammer would have never worked. I thought this recessed area on the main "ring" that houses the ball bearings and what threads into the shaft was were I was supposed to hit it to separate it. I then took a punch and hit mainly the outer brass end cap and withing 30 seconds I could see this was the way to go. I then found the snap ring as mentioned above and pried it loose with a screwdriver. Then everything easily came apart. Anyone else trying this, just use a punch a hit the brass looking end cap until you see that metal starting to crumple up. Then from there just pry the entire endcap off.

Generally, one would have a replacement cv joint ready on hand before starting the task of taking things apart/putting back together. Looking at the parts in the new joint kit gives away all the secrets.

When I did mine afew years ago, I ended up using a three pound sledge hammer. The end cap was really stuck. Chisel and pry bar were no match for it. Damn that felt good!

I had to beat mine to death with a hammer there was no prying it off but once it was demolished I clipped the snap ring off and slid the old joint off right into the trash then cleaned the shaft and installed the new boot new joint new grease and new cover and was good to go!
