Question D30a Locker

So I got a great deal on an ARB over on Pirate4x4 site and was wondering what everyone thinks about installing a locker on the aluminum D30? Currently I will be running the stock tires 235-70-16 and only plan on a small lift in the distant future. The larges tires I will use will most likely be 30" or 31" tires. Will the D30 survive or will I have problems? Probably the hardest trail I will be running will be in California, Fresno area Swamp Route.

With a locker it will actually last longer , less stress put on it
D30a's break due to one wheel spinning then rapidly catching hold. With a good locker like the ARB that is eliminated
If going to 30-31s consider regearing while you're doing it

Tom - re-gear can you explain the reason why I it would be a good idea to re-gear from 3.73 to 4.10 when going form a 29" tire to 30"-31" tires.

Not necessary with the size tire you plan on running. 4:10's would be good idea if down the road you planned on running larger tires say 32" or larger.

4:10's and 31's work well together. 4:56's and 32's also work well. 32's bog down 4:10's a little but can be put up with. 31's bog down 3:73's but can be put up with.

Honestly I would re-gear to 4.10's if I were to do this kind of work.

Ah, but it is a good idea to regear with 30s even, You'd be so suprised how much better they run. Like John mentioned, 30-31s 4.10s , 32s 4.56s
From experience of running 32s and 4.10s the last 90,000 plus miles
My 03 that I am getting ready to build will be running a tire which is 30.5 inches tall and 4.10s

By the way John and TwoBobs are both running 30 inch tires and 4.10s, know for a fact since they were done at my place! John with 245-75-16s and Bob with 265-70-16s

Tom, I respectfully disagree in the case of the manual transmission...I have not found power loss or mileage to be unacceptably altered...

OK I'll do the debate, heard that from others with manuals as well, UNTIL they decided to regear, then couldn't believe what they were missing power wise and going up hills etc. One guy said he never realized how many times he downshifted on the road he traveled every day, didn't have to after a regear though. But he kept reaching for the shifter out of habit.
Doesn't make a bit of difference what ****** you have, the only thing different is you are shifting down a manual thinking you need to when in fact if it was regeared you wouldn't have to.
