Hi...will a 42RLE from a 2003 4x4 swap in to replace a bad 42RLE that's in a 2005 2x4? Any differences between the 2x4 and 4x4 trannys?

Also, if I could fine one, would a 45RFE swap in to replace the bad 42RLE, and again any differences between 2x4 vs 4x4?

Not sure if the trannys are different or if the 4x4 simply adds a t-case.

Thanks!

Not a direct swap at all. Control systems are way different plus exhaust systems are different. The 45RFE is a good ****** but I don't think it's worth doing in something that didn't have one already.

Thanks Hoosier. What about the 42RLE from the 4wd 2003 into my 2wd 2005? (2005 has the 42RLE also)

Its the same transmission, but with that said on a 2wd 42rle the transmission has a long adapter on the end for the drive shaft to mount to and on a 4wd 42rle the adapter on the end is much shorter to allow the transfer case to bolt up to it.

Haven't pulled an RLE, but LOTS of experience with the RFE. If the RLE is anything like the RFE, you can remove the 2wd tail housing from it and swap on the transfer case adapter.
