After a few problems with my own radiator cooling fan I feel I've become a bit of an expert. I've noticed just how dirty my rad's electric fan has become from offroading through the mud. I'm on my second fan and know of another KJ owner that has has similar problems. Has anybody else experienced issues with their fan clogging up?

I'm the Other KJ with fan issues. Clutch fan coming soon. I'm going to build a front skid extension soon to stop stuff from coming up into the back of the fan and rad. I think the issue is that gap between the lower rad support and front skid. Keep your Rad clean tho guys I recommend removing the electric fan and flushing water back and forth through the cores every 5-6 months. Especially if you encounter mud or sandy dust and water. If you never have flushed the dirt out make time soon to do it. I will guarantee you get more than you ever thought was in there out. Taking the fan off is the key tho and run water through both ways. I spent about an hour running it both ways before the water would come out clear both ways.

Took my fan motor apart cleaned and reseated the brushes about 40,000 miles ago. All it takes to make it stop working is a muddy film. Still have the spare I bought but have not needed it yet.

I haven't had any issues yet. Some people won't like it. But It always brings a smile to my face when I open up my hood and see dried up mud stains everywhere.

Stay out of the mud and no issues with mud related breakages:p.

I rate mud up there with ESP and ABS,all being the devil.

X2
all the fan issues are from mud
so the easy fix is to stay out of the mud

a few years back I took great pride in the fact that I wheeled
an average of 1.5X a month for 11 months and never washed
my Jeep it was DUSTY as hell inside and out but only mud was
when is spilled a little water in it on an up hill climb
it was the weekend joke "Thompson got his Jeep muddy
now he will need to wash it"

So true TJKJ, serious mud can foul the clutch assemblies on standard transmissions and all too often result in snapped driveshafts, axle shafts transfer cases & transmissions.

Now muddy puddles are a different story, those are fun to play in :D as long as they're not so deep that you have muddy water in your Jeep
real hard to get out of the upholstery #-o

IMO go out wheel the hell out of it push it too the limit where ever you feel safe doing so, MUD to Rocks bring it on. but never and I mean never complain about breaking stuff because it only broke on account of your own choices.
