I am wanting to swap my 8.25" open rear axle.
Is a axle from a Liberty with ABS compatible with a Liberty without ABS?
HELP!

What year is your KJ and what year is the donor axle from? It could be a yes or no answer. They used different flanges(yokes) on different years so a new/modified rear driveshaft maybe needed and a '06+ 8.25 will not work due to a 4 channel ABS system in a '02-'05 KJ with or without ABS(3 channel ABS).Then if you got a '02 you'd have to swap the brakes as '02's have drums and '03+ have discs.

Why swap?
Did you bend the housing?
Easy and cheep to rebuild?

X2. You would only need to open it and do what you wanted to it as long as the housing is not damaged. I also saw that you said "open." There are lots of ways to lock it or put in a limited slip if that's all you want to do.

Both Liberties are 2005 models.
The donor has the factory limited slip.
Mine has a open differential.
Money is major factor, disabled virtually no cash but have two sons that are professional mechanic's.

True the donor Liberty has the 3.7L Automatic Transmission which is the same as my Liberty. They both have the 3:73 ratio gears as does the 2.8L CRD with a 5 speed Auto.

In the 2005 Liberty the Gear Ratios offered are as follows:

2.4L 5 speed manual in 2WD & 4WD has 4:10 Ratio
3.7L 5 speed manual in 2WD & 4WD has 3:55 Ratio
3.7L Automatic in 2WD & 4WD has 3:73 Ratio
2.8L 5speed manual in 2WD & 4WD has 3:73 Ratio

I appreciate the help with this.
Now if I can just figure out what to bribe my Sons (adults) with to get this installed.

How many miles and what history does the donor rear axle have?
I would just pull the trash lock out and install it in the axle housing under the rig you have.
At least that way you will know if the trash lock needs a rebuild, new bearings, etc., etc.

Donor axle

The donor had 43,000 plus Mi. on according to the jeep.com inquiry, the odometer had 47,000 plus on it. Private party had it, was literally totaled by Grandma (in the front). My two Sons who are both ASE mechanic's pulled the rear end and checked it over pretty well. The reason for swapping the complete rear end is money. Just the labor cost to have a Locker or Limited Slip Unit in is at least $300-$400 more than the complete rear end.

In that case if the replacement diff is in good working order, get one of your sons to
swap it over.
Let us know how it works out for you.

Average install of a locker/LSD around here is $250-$350(solid axles),ARB's and electric lockers are a little more due to housing mods needed.

The OEM trashloc is not worth it unless you got it for free and then still not a good deal by anymeans.By 50k it's pretty much at the end of it's useful life anyways if the gear oil was not changed every 12k-15k like it should be.

Yeah
You have 2 ase mechanics doing the work
So labor is free
A DTT is $400-$500 but it works and will have 0 miles
a much better route

True, but the OP is disabled and more than likely on a fixed income/disability
pension like myself so every dollar counts at the end of the day.
So what he's getting is better than an open diff even if it is Trash Lock.

play money

Correct on the income/pension part!
The axle was $50, and since it's still in the low 100's F during the day the adult beverages for later, will run another $20-$30.
I drew a set of plans for a roof rack for my 2005 liberty and my younger Son is welding it this week. New steel tubing cost $36 dollars, finished rack will weigh about 23lbs. Better than $150 and up for almost anything that can be bought here.
