rear cargo shelf

Well i decided to finally make a shelf for the cargo are of my jeep. It was easier than expected and took about an hour to actually build.

Its very strong, i put 100lbs on it and it didn't flex at all. All in all not bad for $24. if you're looking to do something similar and want details just let me know and I'll put up dimensions and stuff

I started with a piece of ply wood 3/4" Thick (you can use any size you want) Cut to these specs ------v

You will also need a 1" dowel rod, 1" pipe clamps (4), and carpet of your choice to cover
Cut dowel rod to 45.5"
You will need to use the pieces you cut off to glue to the underside near the back seats to level out the shelf (as the drawing shows)

if i did that it would partially defeat the purpose of being easily removable incase i need the cargo area and seats down for something big

That's pretty neat looking, great for hiding stuff in the back too.

How easy is it to take out? It would be cool if there was a way to support and hinge the middle in case you only wanted half a shelf...

They come out really quickly. You can see the version I built over 5 years ago where I used a textured paint instead of cloth for a covering. It has held up for just over 5 years now w/o much wear and tear. I used the back cargo shelf all the time.

Look about 1/2 way down page two of my mods to get all the details.

1 question. what is the height from floor to bottom of the shelf when installed? if it will clear the double stroller I might not hate the KJ trunk so much. LOL

As long as the stroller doesn't go above the two black metal pieces of the back of the back seats, you should be fine.

are the dowl rods strong enough? please sho how you attached them and they secure in place.

hey J-rod i have built one of these and have had a lot of wieght on it.(dont recomend driving with stuff loose up there just in case) I dont know if the double stroller will fit under it but our Jeep liberty sport jogging stroller will not unless you remove the tray from it. We will have to get together so you can see it in person.

I put our strollers on top and use bungie cords to strap them on. The under part of mine is full of tools and roadside emergency kit.

One of our strollers is a BOB and fits up top with no problems. If there were no junk it would fit underneath as well.

I used metal as it is stiff and won't sag over time. The metal I used is just 3/8" (I think) rod from Home Depot.

Like I said, I have had mine for over 5 years and no issues at all.
