Rock Rail totally bolt on?

Okay from all the makes out there, factory/oem and aftermarket.
Which is 100% bolt on. No drilling or need to remove anything.
Just attach the part.

Wow, I thought the Mopar units would just bolt up (after you installed those freakin' nut-sert things). As for the rest, I know for a fact that Boulder Bars require drilling, LOTS of drilling, and I would think the rest are the same way.

Rock rails

The ones I have from Mopar don't require any drilling. I bought them used, and am having a hard time finding the nutzerts to install them. I found some on eBay that I think will work. You need 16 of them.

They install in the holes just fine, we'll see how good they hold. To install them I used the flanged, threadless nut from my skid plate install, and an 8mm bolt from Lowe's (Home Depot doesn't carry metric).

Just installed some Mopar rails on jasonk jeep and we didnt need to do any drilling.

Thats the major reason I do not have any rocker rails, I dont want to drill holes in everything. :-s The mopar rocker rails are not much.

Have you ever gone by an obstacle because you didn't have rails? I understand needing skids but how often are rock rails used? Keep in mind this is our primary vehicle so a lift is out of the question for now as is ********* 'trailin' laugh.gif

Yea, I have. If you are stock, there are many ways to use them. \:D/

every single one of the RR out there require drilling - Except - the Mopar ones that are setup to use existing holes & nutzerts.
Mopars - stock RRs are ok to do some offroading but eventually they'll get beat up
I did MOAB with those Mopar Stock Rails that came with my Renegade - they are round - by the time I got done with MOAB, they were square - but... they did their job - they protected good.

just because the way aftermarket companies make rock rails, they need to make them stronger and using the same setup just does not work at all.
for Example, All Js bouderbars use 7 to 9 bolts on the rocker panel itself, plus 4 bolts on each of the arms that connect to the frame itself
So - for that reason, using the OME holes just does not work

OEM Instructions

The Mopar rails I bought in the pictorial instructions show that I have to drill.... that is why they are still sitting new in the box.... (Aeh)

im starting to contemplate rock rails and i also am curious about drilling. I was under my libby this weekend looking at things, and on the drivers side. wher ethe rear nutzers go for the mopar rails, on the other side of the frame is several lines. two brakes and i assume fuel lines.

so do aftermarket rails that require drilling take this into consideration and have you drill/bolt where those lines arent?

There are no lines where you have to drill, only drill through the outside, not clear through.
I have had Boulder Bars on mine and now Rock Lizard, each mounted differently so have a lot of holes, doesn't hurt a thing and easy to do.

Remember " A Jeeps not your's until you drill that first hole in it!"

You drill through the pinch weld at the rockers and attach self-tapping screws there... and then you drill and mount the innermost mounts to the frame using self-tapping screws as well.

Here's a couple of pics from my install a couple years ago... not great, but an idea:

Should be bolts at the pinch weld or at least thats the way the two sets I have on were. Self tappers back in the frame.
I think you can see the bolts here on mine, yes second one from the rear is missing! :D One short! Troy cheated me out of one when I got them :rolleyes::D;)
