We are going to be purchasing a 2005 Jeep Liberty Sport
next thursday. The first purchase we want to make is a
sturdy roof rack. We have our eye on the Rocky Road
outfitters adventure rack, with steel rails to replace the
plastic rails that are stock.

Does anyone have experience with this rack? Are there any
other racks that you can recommend? We would like to be
under $500.00. Thanks ! JB

Under $500 should be really easy.

Rola makes a decent one. I think this is the size that fits a KJ:

Rola Roof Mounted Cargo Basket - Steel - 52" Long x 40-1/2" Wide x 6" Deep - 130 lbs Rola Roof Basket 59504

There are also tons of how-to's to show you how to build one too.

Even if you replace the factory roof rails, which are rated for 150lbs, keep in mind that doesn't mean that the roof itself wont bend or cave under significantly more weight.

If you don't plan on exceeding the 150lbs (or so) on the roof, then I don't see what's terribly wrong with the OE rails. They're just covered in plastic trim, but underneath is metal tube.

Glad to know the stock rails will handle 150 lbs. Did not know it was
a steel tube covered in plastic. 150lbs is good. Thanks! JB

The Rola is strong & steel weighs about 50 lbs. I have repainted it to keep it looking new.
Quite slimline at hwy speed, wind noise is low.

For camping items is ok, but if you want to put bigger coolers or deeper stuff on top, you may want to consider a deeper basket.

Here's another option: Contact Us

Why the link shows as "contact us", I don't know.

Need to remember also, if the factory roof rails handle 150lbs., and a basket is 50lbs., that only leaves 100lbs. for cargo.

There are many options,
bottom of the list would be anything from RRO

I know from many of your previous posts you are not a fan of RRO. My RRO rock slider rails have been holding up pretty well (3 years i think?) and so have my RRO replacement roof rails. But I have not done anything extreme enough to bend them....yet.

Yes but I still have pics somewhere from LOST of the guy with a KK first trip out the RRO rock rails bent like a pretzel. They would not stand behind them either.
Its stories like that from the last 16-18 years plus still owing money to various people I know personally is the reason I won't support them or suggest anyone buy from them. Much like RL.

Such a shame about RL. Pretty sure I got one of the last sets of Super Skinks, got them in November of 2013. Love them. Actually from ordering to getting them was only about 2 weeks. Detours took longer with the backbone...about a month or so.

I highly recommend the Garvin Wilderness Products Sport rack. I also have the wind breaker for the front. Well built and UPS shipable.

Sport Series Rack, 02-06 Liberty, 52"L

These look really nice, so you don't need crossbars or anything to mount them up? Also does anything you get with the box say how much weight it can handle?

I love the look and if I don't need crossbars thats awesome but $667.95 is the most expensive basket I've seen.

There are also a couple of options from rage powersports on amazon. I have the cheaper of the options and it works great for what I need. It also comes with the front wind faring. Also it is only $160 at the moment. It isn't the best painted thing I have ever bought as the paint will just chip off, but when secured right it is nice and sturdy.
