Just took the KJ out and after slowing from about 50 to 10mph, there was a loud grinding/scraping noise from the back. Got worse if you hit the brakes and then after maybe about a mile of driving, it completely went away. Sometimes when I've parked it I've noticed that there's a scraping noise that sounds like the ebrake shoes engaged slightly but I didn't have the ebrake on those times. I'm thinking they could be related? I don't see any brake dust (i.e. caliper sticking) or any thing visually wrong.

Any ideas? Thanks so much!

I've found in the past that certain brake shoes/pads will react to different weather conditions and after sitting for a while ( day or two etc , ) will have almost like rust.
Then driving and first hitting brakes you have some what is somewhat like a grinding noise for a bit .
Not sure if that is what you are experiencing but a place to start

This was after driving for about 10 miles and the KJ gets driven everyday pretty much.

The factory brakes on my MK squeak like they're bad when it's humid or has rained... and only in reverse. It's whatever pads/rotors they use, because once I hit the pedal a couple of times, it's gone.

I tend to agree with Tom.

Do you have drums or discs in the back? I think the '05's have discs...

I seem to recall the e-brake hardware coming apart in the drums on my KJ - just due to age... rust and such. Pulled it all apart, replaced the hardware and everything was good again. I don't know exactly how the e-brakes are set up in the newer model years. Could be worth checking into.

On the passenger side the e-brake pads came off in the "top hat" and were rattling around in there. I rarely use the e-brake and I guess the rivets that hold the pads to the backing plate rusted away - made for an awful racket driving down the highway.

Maybe pull the rotors and see if the e-brake pads have fallen off.

Had time to jack it up real quick this evening and look, I also noticed that on the driver's side the little spring clip (can see it on the bottom right pad in this pics) has rusted off and allows the pads to move a bit
