Hi All,
What is the proper operation of the Selec-Trac transfer case?

I know it's a shift-on-the-fly transfer case, but do you have to shift it on the fly for it to engage???

Yesterday we got about 4" of snow. I warmed up my Jeep, got in it, and put it in part-time four wheel drive before taking off. I got to the end of the parking lot(about 10') and stopped to look for traffic. I went to pull out and the back tires started spinning and the transfer case chattered like it wasn't in gear all the way. I tried shift the transmission from drive to park and back to drive to see that would lock it in, but it did nothing. Then I put the transfer case back to 2wd, then up to full-time, then to part-time and it engaged.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, or if something needs adjusting.

It's an '03 Limited Edition with 75,000. I've only had the vehicle a coulpe months now and this is the second time it's done this to me.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

You need to be moving for it to engage properly, & I believe moving forward is the key. Doesn't need to be fast, a slow creep will do, but moving.

You dont NEED to be moving for it to engage but it makes it engage alot better and smoother.

You were hearing the gears grinding on each other since they wanted to engage but couldnt. Its happened to me a few times and I try to not let it happen.

Shift it while moving in a straight line. If you tap the gas after shifting it usually helps it to shift right away.

To shift into 4low, slow to 2-3mph, shift the ****** to N, pull the lever back and over(its got a gate), then shift back into D.

Stay safe and remember that 4wd doesnt mean you can drive faster or stop faster. :)

We just got snow. So of course i was out playing. i noticed that from a stop it was a crapshoot to get it to go into 4hi. seems that some movement made a difference. Is there a top speed that you can do on the fly, is there a top speed to be driving in 4 hi? ( is there a thread already that covers this that i didnt see?)

I read the owners manual and I've got the hang of it. It works a lot like my old Chevy truck did with full-time four wheel drive. I just had to get the feel of it.

Like GeekyJeep said, at a stand still in park it's a crap shoot.

I found that it's like my old truck. If you shift it on the fly it shifts smooth and easy. If you're shift while at a dead stop, it's best to apply the brake, shift from Park to Neurtal and back to Park real quick. This takes any load off the transfer case/drive line and it allows it to shift easily in the selected gear.

I wish the owners manual would have explained it a little clearer.

It's quite possible that the Chevy had the same transfer case, or a derivative of the same case. New Process, the maker of the NP-242 started life as New Venture, which was co-owned by MOPAR & GM.

4hi you can not drive on just wet or dry roads, it has to be loose surfaces like deep snow or mud and such. Dont try using 4hi in just rain or you could ruin the transfer case.

I've never had a problem engaging 4WD HI in park. We recently got about 8 inches of snow. I put it in 4HI, shifted from park to reverse, and not a single tire spun nor did I have gear grinding. I wonder why? Now Im curious!

EDIT: I thought it was worth mentioning that, according to my build sheet, I have the "Command-trac" part time 4WD system.
