serious help needed, P0038 code will not clear

Hey guys, so, I need some serious help here, I just bought a 2004 Liberty, V6, 4x4. 165k on it. Check engine light was on when I bought it, I had the P0038 code (driver side rear o2) come up. I have an pretty good code reader but it would not clear. --- code would not clear. I thought that was odd, I have never had that happen before on any car. Normally, when there are o2 code it will clear and then come back after a drive cycle. I said what the hell, replaced the driver side rear o2, it was cheap and easy. Still would not clear. OK, so, still have JUST the P0038 code. I checked power at the plug, Im not 100% how to check voltages and whatnot, but, I used my voltmeter and seems like I have power at the plug. So, even if there are fuses there, seems like they are fine but I dont think there are o2 fuses. So, seems like to me I have an ECM issue. Thoughts? Anything else to check?

I called the dealer that has worked on it before and that o2 had recently been replaced, so I know guys will say to only use OE parts, but, in this case I think the problem is deeper. Even if the o2 I installed is junk, the light should still go off and then come back on, when I say it will not clear, it will not clear at all

pull the battery terminal (-) and stand on the break for 5 minutes then re-attatch and see. if they used OEM it would be NGK ... check the wiring for fraying around the pigtail.... if none of this works i'd see about gettiing your PCM tested.

I have the same problem. My O2 sensors have been replaced years ago and the dealership in Miami stated my computer needs to be replaced. (At that time I was quoted $1600.00) Last month the Subaru dealership they recently brought over a head Chrysler mechanic who has years of experience and saw the code and said that is O2 sensors are bad and needs to be replaced. Since I said they are not bad, they will replace them and test the old ones and if the sensors tested fine they will charge me $0.00. They agreed it is the computer giving out an erroneous code. The mechanic and the Service manager told me to buy the part and replace it at my convenience and they will help me if needed.(Great place bought two Subies from them). I have seen a company on eBay which you give the them VIN and they will program a reconditioned unit.

That is one of my things to do as soon as I finish building the outdoor kitchen which I am working on now.

yea, everything you guys are saying is what I am thinking. I am going to have my shop check voltages, etc but I suspect the ECM is the issue. I had luck with a mini-van and the ebay ECM rebuild, which is what i will probably do, however, any other inside would be great, and I will keep this updated. Thanks
