so, the first time I was under the Jeep, I needed to remove the skid plate for access. well, 2 of the 4 bolts holding on the rear skid plate had rusted into the riv-nuts (meaning the bolt rusted into the riv-nut, and spun in the frame), and I had to cut the heads off from the bolts in order to remove it. I will be going past the closest Jeep dealership next week. but before I order the new riv-nuts, I want to know if this is something I can install at home, or do I have to have the dealership install them?

I had one on the cross member do this and decided it was easier to drill it out and put a bolt with a nut on the top. To answer your question, yes there is a special tool, but if you google it you'll see that it resembles a bolt and a nut, so I think you could manage without.

I may be a little late to the party, but I still have about 8 rivnuts left. With the insertion tool.

Shoot me a PM with your address, and I'll get them to you for a small donation to your local food pantry.

Yep, I got the message. Thanks TC, I forgot that was changed.

I did notice once I dug them out of the box that it's a mixed bag of styles, but they are all the same size and they all worked for me with different skid plates. The insertion tool is there along with directions like the pic TC posted. But there are no bolts.
Hope they work out for you.

They'll be in the mail tomorrow if the day isn't too hectic.

Thank you! I am not to sure what the other styles will be, but I am pretty good at making things work, so I'm not to worried about it. as far as bolts, the ones that are in there are a mixed bag of lengths and head sizes. so once i get all of them out, I'm going to order all new stainless steel bolts, and slather them in copper anti seize. I live in Michigan, and i think they use 400 tons of salt on the roads every winter. so there is no such thing as "rust proof". but this should be about as close as I know how to make them.

They are on the way USPS.

I'm in WI, so I know what you mean about salt. I just changed my bolts every spring when I removed my skids to deep clean the underbody; that way they never got too rusted in

Any chance the rivnut tool can be pass it forward to me when you're done?
:D

yes, that's part of being in a community. help each other when you can. PM me with your address, I will post here when I can ship them out. (I have not received them yet [probably slow post office + living out in the boonies])

OOPS! I just realized that I may have over stepped my bounds. I need to ask jo6pac if he wants these back! I could have sworn he said to keep them. but I can not find anywhere that he said that.

"need" maybe not. but I am going to buy all new bolts so I can get uniform hex sizes and lengths.

I bought a bunch when I though i lost my factory ones.

Nope, don't need the tool back. They have been in a box in the garage since I sold the KJ a few years back.
Just glad they'll go to someone that needs them:cool:
