I bought this mint 2004 with a seized up engine this weekend. I suspect she didn't have regular oil changes. Here is the results....

That means a blown head gasket! That is what occurs when engine oil and coolant met. This happened to my fathers Durango 4.7 and we are in the process of rebuilding the motor.

I plan to rebuild the engine. I picked up a used engine with a good lowers end yesterday.

No coolant in the crankcase... just hardened sludge.

Looks like sport 4x4 judging by the trail rated badge and trim.

That engine's guts look a lot like the internals of my original engine. Previous owner just didn't take care of it - you can tell by the brown/orange tint everywhere.

Have fun with the engine swap - it's very gratifying to get it running again :waytogo:

Looks like the internals of my friend's 1989 Dodge Omni w/2.2L. Her dad bought it from an old lady - and purchased the extended warranty from her, too. Turns out she'd never had the oil changed, just filled up when she got full-service gas. The extended warranty paid for a new long block (no rebuilts or short blocks available at the time). So she got a brand new motor, 4 tires and a few other things fixed for a grand total of $300. I think it had 40,000 miles on it when they bought it.

That thing was a little tank. I liked that car.

Those things were indestructible! I had a friend with a mid 80's Plymouth TC3 and a 2.2L Mitsubishi engine. Never changed the oil (a couple years at least) so I told him I'd do it. I took off the drain plug and nothing came out. Stuck a stubby screwdriver in a bit and about a quart and a half of chunky "stuff" came out. Reminded me of the La Brea tar pits. Filled it back up with the appropriate volume and a new filter and he drove that thing for another 3-4 years. Not sure if he ever changed the oil again but he claimed he did. :shrug:

Why would I want oil in my engine? Oil is dirty and I want my engine clean!

The bad rod bearing had the crank seized. Because I couldn't turn the engine, I couldn't get the torque converter unbolted and had to pull it with the converter still attracted. Needless to say, it was a struggle getting it out.

I picked up a core engine that should have a good crank and rods for $150.

I will try to take pictures as I go along.

I am in the Seattle area.. getting it here might not be so easy. I don't have it apart yet, but based on my preliminary evaluation, it looks like I may have all of the hard parts.

I am a diesel engine guy. This is a little different than I am used to. I will definitely be asking you if i run into any snags.

Tear Down Done

I worked on the beast Saturday and got the engine torn down. I did some cleaning. I have the block loaded in my truck to get hot tanked.

I removed the crankshaft and rods from the donor block. They look good. the crank has been ground once. The main and rod journals are both 0.25 mm under sized. The cylinders still have cross-hatching all the way to the top, so I am planing to just run a flex hone through them and call it good.

The heads look good. They will get a good cleaning, some new valve seals, then back on they go...
