So I have a 2wd 07 KJ and was reading about lockers...

Is it worthwhile to spend the money on a True Trac? We don't really go wheeling or anything like that, but I'd like the ability to go on a "rough" trail every now and then. Plus I enjoy spending money on improvements to the vehicle (as long as it's not a total waste).

And yes, I know, "should have got a 4wd" blah blah. But my wife hates the new body style (I'm not too thrilled about it either) and I only had a limited selection of Jeeps to choose from and limited time to purchase. So, my next vehicle is going to be a used 4WD. :)

Seems like the True Trac might provide some improvements on the road in rough weather (rain, ice). Would that be the case?

well worth it.

I have an 05 Rocky Mtn Ed, and put a True Track in at 200 miles...best thing I have done on it to date. I have always run full Detroit Lockers in everything I have owned, even my 78 Impala, but decided to give the True trac a shot. It is seamless back there. I hve one for the front, but have not gotten around to putting it in yet.

They are not difficult to install if you are mechanically inclined. the ring gear bolts are left hand thread, and I had to radius the holes in the true-trac locker to accomodate the shoulder on the bolts. Other than that, it is a straight forward install.

Driveability is much better, and traction is good. I have never had luck with factory LSD. My 02 Ram 3500 had the factory trac-loc, and it would never engage. After swapping it out with a Detroit No-Spin, I pulled apart the factory trac-loc and found that the clutches and plates were stacked in such a way that there was only two active friction surfaces out out of 16.

I saw on the Jeep Liberty wiki that it might be incompatible with ESP. Anyone know if that's the case?

Somewhere between being sane and insane!

It's kinda unknown at the present moment since nobody has posted yet that they have either a LSD(like the Detriot TrueTrac) or a full locker(ARB) in a ESP KJ.

But the '07 JK Rubicons have a similar ESP/traction control system and factory electric lockers and they do just fine, but then again there PCM may have the correct programming to disengage the ESP/traction control when the lockers are engaged.

Anyone know what would happen if they were not compatible? Would disabling ESP resolve any potential difficulties?

I suppose there is something to be said for being first. :)

the ESP/Traction Control works "almost" like a limited slip anyway, so why go through the hassle of adding lockers? Sure, it might be a little different/better, but when I've been off road in our 2wd KJ I haven't had a problem with one tire spinning and the other doing nothing...it kinda "switches" back and forth until it gets traction, but it does it so fast that you really can't tell.
