Did a search but couldn't find what I'm looking for. I want to get a spare tire mounted bike rack and I'm wondering if anyone has any brand or specific product they recommend over another.

I have a rhode gear rack. It's basically the same as the yakima one so I recommend either. It's about 10 years old and gets used ALOT. It is always on my Jeep so it's been exposed to tons of weather and is fine. Cost $30 on craigslist.

I used to have a thule hitch mount that costs about $400. It was obviously better, held 4 bikes and locked, but I did have a bike fall off the back on the highway. I've never had one fall off my $30 rhode gear.

After going through my photobucket to find a pic of the old one, all I've got to say is wow I miss having actual flex in the front...

Shit, how well did that go over for the cars behind your, or for the bike itself for that matter...

I don't know, the hitch mounted seems like it might be a pain to leave for an extended period of time especially if you open the tailgate often. I only need one that holds a couple bikes, and even that's a stretch because its always just me. I'm just getting tired of folding down the seats and putting the bike in the back..

Thank's for your suggestions guys, at least now i have some trusted brands/models to go by.

Some off the hitch mounts have a hinge so the bikes lay down to get in the back. I made my own 2 bike carrier and I can slide it out of the receiver enough to get in mine.
Here's a pic again

^Your KK has a lift gate, not a swing gate though.

The Thule has a latch at the bottom that lets you fold it down. Can be folded with the bikes on or off. I really like my spare tire mount. I have been thinking about what I want to replace it with when it finally dies. Probably either getting the same thing or drilling into my crossbars and adding a couple fork mounts.

As for the bike falling off the back...It was still locked to the rack with the extendable cable lock. It was basically like tying it to a rope and dragging it behind the Jeep at 70mph for a mile. Metal sure burns away quickly getting dragged on the road.

I borrowed a Bell 2 bike carrier before I made mine. It was hinged also. Yes, KK's have lift gate and KJ have swing that's why I didn't need to make mine with a hinge. My first plans were with a hinge, which were just to difficult to make. I basically slapped this one together, then realized I just need to slide it out aways to get in the back.
The Bell I borrowed is very light weight mine is heavy in comparison. I'd have bought a carrier if I had 120.

I have the Thule carrier that mounts over the spare. I believe I bought it online for around $150 a year or two ago. Anyways, works okay for 2 adult bikes. Small framed bikes do not fit as well/secure. You should remove the bike(s) from the carrier prior to opening the tailgate. While not required, the liftglass will likely be kind of stuck against your bike handles and you will be putting a lot of extra weight on the tailgate/hinge.

I think it is a good compromise solution. Super quick to put on and off. But definitely not the most stout solution.

Mopar one is the way to go. i mountain bike ******** and its by far the best one ive seen out there (my brother gave me one he was going to use on his rubicon but it didnt work well with the mud terrains) its easy to go on and easy to come off (you can leave the stem on and take the rack off completely. GO WITH THE MOPAR!!!!!!! and look for it on craigslist for cheap
