How do you remove the exterior spare tire reinforcement brackets on the rear tailgate? Mine are severely rusted and will need to be repainted. Do I have to take the rear plastic panel off to get access from the inside?

Removes from out side. Has some small bolt/nuts holding mount on.

No .. as in .. that won't help. You can try and use a socket (E Torx 8) on the end of the bolts, but they certainly were not designed to come out :D

Other than that vice grips and a new set of bolts.

Bonne Chance!

Very easy to do
remove spare etc of course
you will see one nut on each bolt, remove each one of those and there you go.
IF you want the bolts out of the door, run 2 of the nuts on the bolt, tighten together, and then use a wrench to loosen the bolt by turning the back nut

That's a really handy trick.

Got it off with Toms trick. Thank God they put a plastic shim in between body and bracket, no rust on body. Did find some on third brake light while I was back there, Oh well. Thanks again guys.
